Reddit Bans Paul McCartney from His Subreddit After Sharing Concert Photos

Paul McCartney has had a pretty eventful week. Two sold-out shows at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, a standing ovation or two, and getting banned from his own Reddit community. Wait, what?
The beloved former Beatle posted photos from the March 27 and 28 concerts to his own subreddit, r/paulmccartney. Since the shows were phone-free, McCartney’s team shared a Dropbox link with concert images, along with a note: “As last night was a phone-free experience, we wanted to make sure that you had some memories from the show to share with friends, family and loved ones.” Well, it looks like Reddit didn’t like this as much as the fans did. They removed the post and banned the musician from the platform.

The ban didn’t go unnoticed. Fans were quick to point out the irony; Reddit eventually even reinstated McCartney’s account. As for what actually happened, Reddit’s official explanation is diplomatic. “There was a technical bug that made the account look banned, but no one would ban one of The Beatles,” a Reddit spokesperson told Dexerto. So, McCartney’s account is now back, but the original post is still gone from the subreddit.

Interestingly enough, we’ve just recently written about a phone-free concert, where Harry Styles gave his fans 20,000 disposable cameras to capture the event. Nice gesture – if you disregard the massive amount of plastic waste it generated. In that article, I suggested sharing a link from the official photographers as one of the solutions. This way, fans could enjoy a phone-free concert and have some nice photos, much nicer than their blurry, grainy phone shots. This was exactly what McCartney did, and this is how it ended.
After all this fuss, it’s still not clear what exactly triggered the ban. Was it automatic, or did a human moderator remove the post and ban McCartney? And why is the original post not back? I guess we’ll never know, as the subreddit’s moderation team hasn’t commented.
