50–200mm f/2.8

OM SYSTEM has announced the M.Zuiko Digital ED 50–200mm f/2.8 IS PRO lens – a new telephoto zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds users seeking reach, speed, and portability. Equivalent to 100–400mm in 35mm terms, this lens combines a fast constant aperture with built-in image stabilization and rugged weather sealing, making it a flexible option for wildlife, sports, and close-up work in outdoor environments.

While the focal length range is familiar, the inclusion of a constant f/2.8 aperture across that zoom range is unusual – and particularly significant in the MFT world, where lenses often prioritize compactness over speed. In this case, the 50–200mm manages both.

Bright, Long, and Handholding-Friendly

The lens offers a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout its entire 100–400mm equivalent zoom range. This allows for better subject isolation, improved low-light performance, and consistent exposure across focal lengths. Despite its reach, the lens remains relatively compact for what it delivers – under 9 inches long and weighing approximately 2.75 pounds with the tripod foot.

The optical design consists of 21 elements in 13 groups, with multiple low dispersion and high refractive elements to help maintain clarity and color accuracy. OM SYSTEM also includes its ZERO II coating to reduce flare and ghosting in backlit or high-contrast scenes.

Autofocus and Stabilization

The internal autofocus system is optimized for tracking fast and erratic subjects, such as birds or athletes, and supports continuous AF (C-AF) at burst rates up to 50 fps on compatible OM SYSTEM bodies.

For handheld work, the lens includes in-lens stabilization rated at 5.5 stops. When paired with a body that supports Sync IS, this jumps to 7 stops of compensation. This is especially useful when working at the longer end of the focal range or when shooting close-up subjects at slower shutter speeds.

In addition to image sharpness, the stabilization system also contributes to a steadier EVF or LCD preview, making it easier to frame and follow distant subjects.

Not Just for Distance

While its primary appeal is its telephoto reach, the 50–200mm f/2.8 also performs well at closer distances. It has a minimum focusing distance of 2.6 feet (78 cm) throughout the zoom range, allowing for a maximum magnification of 0.25x at 200mm. That makes it useful for photographing small wildlife or detail shots without needing a dedicated macro lens. It also supports in-camera focus stacking when paired with compatible OM SYSTEM cameras.

Like other PRO series lenses, the 50–200mm is built to withstand demanding outdoor use. The lens is IP53-rated for dust and splash resistance, and it’s tested for use in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C). The internal zoom and focusing design ensures the physical length of the lens doesn’t change during operation, which helps maintain weather sealing and balance on gimbals or monopods. A fluorine-coated front element repels water and oil, making the lens easier to clean in dusty or wet conditions.

The lens includes four function switches for IS, AF/MF, focus limiting, and a customizable L-Fn/Preset Beep toggle. It also features four L-Fn buttons spaced around the barrel for easy access regardless of orientation.

Accessory Support

The OM System’s new 50–200mm f/2.8 lenscomes with a rotating, Arca-compatible tripod collar for balanced mounting. It’s also compatible with OM SYSTEM’s MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters, which extend the lens’s reach to 140–560mm f/4 and 200–800mm f/5.6 equivalent, respectively. The included lens hood features a sliding window to allow easy adjustment of rotating filters.
