Mokacam claims to be ‘the world’s smallest 4K camera’ and a ‘GoPro Killer’

If you think there are enough action cameras on the market already, Raymond Wang doesn’t want to hear it. That’s because he and his award-winning team are creating Mokacam, an modular action cam that they claim will be ‘the world’s smallest 4K camera.’

Currently being funded on IndieGoGo, Mokacam is a WiFi connected action cam that features a 16 megapixel sensor capable of recording 4K footage through a 152º field of view lens. The camera itself is small, lacking a screen and a great deal of battery – but that’s where the genius of Mokacam comes in.

In addition to the standard camera unit, you can purchase extra accessories to customize your experience. Currently, the Mokacam team has included an 270º rotating screen with integrated battery and a backup batter that snaps into place.

The idea behind Mokacam is to capture the moment – not worry about gear or settings. That’s why Mokacam includes a distortion free mode, which will automatically correct footage captured with its wide-angle lens. While we can’t vouch for the unique feature, the example below looks to be quite impressive, albeit in lo-res GIF form.

Two other features included are a motion activated mode, which automatically capture footage when it detects movement, and an integrated magnetic mount for securing to surfaces such as a car or street lamp.

A fee application is available for both iOS and Android that will let you see what Mokacam is seeing and transfer content directly to your phone.

For mounting, Mokacam is capitalizing on GoPro’s mounting platform, allowing you to use any existing GoPro mounts with it.

Mokacam has 15 days left in its IndieGoGo campaign, but the creators have already amassed 400% of their $50,000 goal.

As for pricing, a $99 ‘early bird’ special will secure you a Mokacam, $70 off what it will retail for. Once those are gone, the price will jump up to $129. An extra battery or LCD screen will set you back $19 and $29, respectively. The first batch of Mokacams are set to ship in February 2016.

The idea behind Mokacam is great, but with a delivery date of February 2016, there’s a good chance GoPro will have a competitive camera out on the market by then. Not only that, but as with all crowdfunded endeavors, there’s always the risk production won’t go as planned and it will be further delayed. Or worse, completely cancelled.
