It looks like we’re not the only ones craving human connection in the world of bots and AI. Flickr has announced a photo festival, extending its devotion to community into the real world. MODE by Flickr is the World’s Photography Festival, taking place from September 18 to 20, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Let me tell you more about it and what you can expect.

What is MODE by Flickr?

Flickr describes MODE as “a celebration of true human connection through art, passion, boldness, and experimentation.” The festival combines “elements of a traditional trade show with a high-energy festival,” Flickr explains. “Each day there will be workshops, concerts, talks, demos, screenings, and meetups, all designed to leave photographers creatively recharged and more connected to their community.”

I’m imagining something between a music festival and a trade show, and I’m feeling overly excited and a bit anxious at the same time. :) My social anxiety aside, it actually sounds excellent, like a perfect mashup of the two concepts. Sounds like something I’d enjoy as a concert photographer! In case you need to decompress, you’ll have access to Flickr Pro Lounge. It’s just for Flickr Pros and VIPs, though, so keep that in mind when buying tickets.

What Can You Expect at Flickr’s Photo Festival?

MODE by Flickr offers seven different themes, aka “modes,” so I believe everyone will find something for themselves:

MODE: Change – Explore powerful storytelling through photojournalism, historical retrospectives, and activism that shows how one image can shift the world.

MODE: Next Get hands-on with cutting-edge technology through tech demos, editing workshops, and AI-powered tools shaping photography’s future.

MODE: Money Learn how to turn creativity into income with insights on print sales, photo licensing, and growing and scaling your photography business.

MODE: Motion Dive into the world of moving images with film screenings, videography sessions, and demos of the latest video gear.

MODE: Culture Capture the energy of food, music, fashion, and sports through concerts, live portrait shoots, and food styling workshops.

MODE: IRL Reconnect with analog photography through darkrooms, classic cameras, and instant film experiences that celebrate timeless processes.

MODE: Earth Join outdoor enthusiasts for photo walks, landscape photography sessions, and conversations around climate change and environmental storytelling.

A news headline below this article about a different festival serves as a warning for MODE – it has the potential to turn into a Dumpster Fyre Festival: “Festival organisers blow millions on Instagram posts and marketing leaving no budget for the festival itself”.

Ohhh, I remember that! Honestly it didn’t cross my mind, but I sure hope it won’t end up like the Dumpster Fyre Festival (love that word game haha)
