Flickr Is Now Deleting Inactive Accounts – Here’s How to Keep Yours

Flickr is doing a bit of a cleanup at the moment. On July 15, the platform announced it would start locking, then permanently deleting, empty and inactive accounts. So, if you’ve got an old Flickr account gathering dust, it’s worth checking it now and deciding what you want to do with it.

According to the company, the cleanup targets free accounts that have been inactive for at least 90 days and contain no photos, comments, favorites, or group activity. Interestingly enough, I’ve had tons of these follow me over the years, and I’ve always wondered who’s behind them. Perhaps someone who wanted to start using Flickr then changed their mind? A bot? Someone else?

Anyhow, if you have any work on your account and you were active in the past, you’re safe. But if you created an account planning to explore the platform and then just forgot about it… Go log back in.

The Timeline

Flickr laid out the schedule:

• July 15th, 2026 – the policy goes public
• 30 days later – affected accounts start getting locked
• 14 days after locking – accounts get permanently deleted if nobody reclaims them

If you’d like to keep your account and really start posting on Flickr this time, simply log in before August 31, 2026, and you’re good to go. If your account gets locked, contact Flickr support to reclaim it.

But… Why?

Flickr says the reason for deletion is that dormant, empty accounts are easy targets for account takeover, spam, and abuse. Millions of unused logins sitting in the system expose the company to risks it would rather not carry. That’s perfectly understandable, given that Flickr had a data breach in February this year.

Since these are empty accounts, Flickr says there’s not much data at stake. It’s essentially an email address, a username, and login credentials. Once deleted, that information is gone for good, in line with Flickr’s privacy policy. So, if your old account is there somewhere, go ahead and reclaim it. Maybe this is your sign to start posting to the platform and interacting with the community. :)
