If you’re into photojournalism, movies, and are a fan of Johnny Depp, a real treat is coming to movies soon. Johnny Depp plays photographer William Eugene Smith in Andrew Levitas movie Minamata. It’s due to premiere in February 2021, and after watching the trailer – I must admit that I’m really looking forward to it.
W. Eugene Smith was one of the most notable American photojournalists. The movie follows his journey and all the dangers of creating a photo essay of Minamata, where he lived with his wife between 1971 and 1973. Smith brought to light the story of the effects of mercury poisoning in Minamata, caused by a Chisso factory discharging heavy metals into water sources. He was even attacked by the factory employees who wanted to stop him from publishing the story, which caused him to lose the eyesight in one eye. His photos and words were published in the 1975 book Minamata: The Story of the Poisoning of a City, and of the People Who Chose to Carry the Burden of Courage. One of the most famous photos from this essay is Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath, which is one of the most recognizable and iconic Smith’s images.
The movie Minamata was based on the aforementioned book by Aileen Mioko Smith and Eugene Smith. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival on 21 February 2020, and it should be released in the US on 5 February 2021 and in the UK on 12 February 2021. You can watch the trailer above, and let me know – are you looking forward to watching the movie? I sure do!
