Fuji’s GFX 100S announcement coming on January 27th? Price expected to be $5,999

There isn’t a lot of information on this one yet, but Fujifilm is expected to possibly be making an announcement on January 27th for the new Fuji GFX 100S. Probably the most surprising thing about it, though, will be the price, which is anticipated to be a relatively measly $5,999 – putting it well into high end DSLR/mirrorless pricing territory.

The camera, which has been long in the making, will feature a medium format 102-megapixel back-side illuminated sensor and phase detection autofocus. It appears that any suggestions that a shrunken down GFX 100R might lose IBIS may also turn out to be false.

It will be interesting to see how the field plays out over the next couple of years. None of the major full-frame mirrorless manufacturers (Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic) have as yet made a true flagship camera on par with the likes of the Canon 1DX Mark III ($6,499) and Nikon D6 ($6,495) DSLRs, both of which are more expensive than that expected for the GFX 100S. The current highest-end full-frame mirrorless offerings like the Nikon Z7 II, Sony A7R IV, Panasonic S1R and Canon EOS R5 sit at $2,996, $3,498, $3,697 and $3,899 respectively.

At $5,999, the GFX 100S will actually be cheaper than the launch price of the Fuji GFX 50S (currently $5,499). And when those full-frame flagships do finally show up, they might be a tough sell in comparison, particularly for those just making the leap to a higher-end system, even if not so much those upgrading from an existing one.

But, if you’ve got to swap your F & EF mount lenses for Z and RF mount anyway, why not go with a whole new system? Especially when you’re looking at 102-megapixels of juicy goodness?
