Nope, it’s not an April Fool’s joke – the 2022 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is now open for entries. Considering the nature of the contest, I’d say that the date is totally appropriate, and from today on you can submit your own funny wildlife images.
The lovely folks behind this contest have a great way to inspire you to join them. They shared with DIYP some previously unseen photos from the 2021 contest that will inspire you to either go out shooting or search your archive for some hilarious images. Or if nothing else – they will make your day brighter, and we sure all need this at the end of the workweek.
The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have been around for seven years now (boy does time fly! Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE and Tom Sullam co-founded it in 2015 with the goal of making people smile while promoting the conservation of wildlife and their habitats through a humorous and positive message. If you ask me, they’ve certainly been doing a great job.
Ever since its founding, the competition has supported different sustainable conservation organizations. In 2022, Comedy Wildlife teams up with Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN), a UK charity that supports conservation leaders working in their home countries across the Global South. Over 29, years it has channeled £19 million to more than 200 conservationists in 80 countries.
If you decide to submit your images, here are the categories you can submit to:
- Creatures of the Air
- Creatures of the Land
- Underwater Category
- Video Category
- Junior Category
- Portfolio Category
As always, the competition is open to the public and free for anyone to enter, and the winner gets some amazing prizes. They include a safari in the Maasai Mara in Kenya with Alex Walker’s Serian, a handmade trophy from The Wonder Workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the title of 2022 Comedy Wildlife Photographer of the Year. As for the category winners, they all get a Think Tank camera bag and a certificate.
So, what are you waiting for? Visit Comedy Wildlife’s website and submit your photos. The shortlist will be announced in October and the winners in December 2022. And just in case you need the inspiration I mentioned earlier, here are some hilarious photos from the last year’s contest. Enjoy!
