According to Canon Rumors, Sigma might be preparing to give us a good look at its upcoming 85mm f/1.4 DG Art series lens around late August. While the actual lens itself isn’t supposed to be here until early next year, this means that it could be getting announced in the next few months already at Photokina.
No More Wating For Prints – The Lomo’Instant Brings The Lomo Fun to NOW
If you are a fan of analog film, but hated the wait between shooting and developing, this new camera from Lomograpy will make you very, very happy.
The Lomo’Instant is a hybrid between the classic Lomo analog vibe and Fujifilm Instax Mini Film. The camera supports interchangeable lenses (or attachments): Wide Angle (82°), Fisheye (170°) & Portrait (64°).
Here is the interesting bit, While Lomography has both the sales channels and (I would guess) the funds to make this camera alone, they are turning to Kickstarter to back this project. A camera will set you back $69 (if you are an early bird) and a full set is $160. – it is over 30% funding from its $100,000 in just about 2 hours.

Zoom’s New H5: One of the Best Affordable DSLR Microphones Yet
One of the best thing about DSLR cameras is that they’ve made professional filmmaking become more and more affordable for the kids that wish to pursue it. But when your camera has the ability to shoot videos with quality that’s good enough for even filming House, M.D., you want to make sure your sound can match up with it. There’s nothing worse than having an outstanding looking film become completely pointless because of its sound quality, and the microphones that come built in DSLRs don’t really help that at all.
Luckily, there’s companies that offer both expensive and cheap solutions to that; one of them is Zoom, who delve into the latter. The microphones the company has offered give great sound quality for the prices they come at, and they’re expanding their catalogue with the newly announced Zoom H5.
Surprise! Fuji Plans On Releasing A 50MP Medium Format Camera With A Sony Sensor (Or Does It?)
Here is a bit of news that is hard to miss if you walk the rumors sites today. According to Fuji rumors, Fuji is planning on releasing a digital MF (medium format) mirrorless camera. While the rumor is not confirmed, Fuji rumors had a few good ‘prophecies’ over the last years.
According to FR, there are two untrusted sources for this info, one going into the sensor details:[Read More…]
PSA: Have Photos Backed Up On CDs? You May Wanna Move Them!
To be honest, I have not backed up images on CDs for over 10 years now. But back in the days when a D70 RAW file was about 5MB it made sense. You could fit about 140 RAW photos on one CD. Or if you back up a few years earlier, photo labs would provide film scans on CDs, with the average size of 3MB per scan, a CD would hold over 200 photos.
Any why not? CDs were cheap, easily stored and cataloged and they would last forever. Right? Wrong. It turns out that the lifespan of CDs is not as long as everyone initially thought. And it also turns out that CDs are more susceptible to the elements than we thoughts. And your old photo collection stored on CDs and DVDs is probably dying s you read.
Nikon’s New Fluorine Coated Lenses Make You Want To Kiss Them Wearing Lipstick
Nikon definitely knew what they were doing when they released this video on their Japanese channel. The video shows what happens to lenses when they are met with the elements. And by elements I mean oil, color, markers, mud, ink, permanent markers and just about any other fluid on earth.
The fluorine coating acts as repellant and just like Teflon nothing sticks to it. Some of the secret lies in the way the Fluorine coating interacts with liquids. While regular surfaces let fluids ‘rest’ on them, the Fluorine repels them and makes as little contact with the fluid as possible. Here is now Nikon explains it on their site:[Read More…]
Bentley shoots High End ad with iPhone 5S – Edits with iPad
When you think about a camera to match the Bentley brand you probably go as high as you can, Red Dragon, Arri Alexa something along those lines. This is why I was kind of shocked to discover that Bentley’s new ad Intelligent Details was shot entirely on the iPhone 5S.
The video shows Luc Donckerwolke, director of design, and SangYup Lee, head of exterior design, talking about their motivations and decisions inside a $298,000 Bentley Mulsanne.
While the story and cinematography are really catching I hate to say that the camera does not hold its own. Easy shots are…. OK. But the camera really falls when it comes to more complex shots and dynamic range.

Sony’s New Announcements: Pricing for the a7S, and a New Compact Camera
Sony’s announced the pricing and availability for the a7S, a camera recently unveiled at last month’s NAB Show. The flagship camera is now available for pre-order at B&H Photo Video for a price of about $2500, which is significantly less than what most of online media had been predicting earlier on ($3500, to be exact). Pre-order or not, you can grab the a7S when it’s officially released in July.
Aside from the pricing announcement finally coming out for Sony’s new DSLR, the company also decided to bring in the third entry to their RX100 series: the Mark III.
Can We Stop Calling Them Drones? They’re Just RC Helicopters With A Camera
I don’t know when remote control helicopters became drones, but I think its way past time we stop implying that a fancy RC helicopter with a camera strapped to it is some sort of autonomous Terminator robot.
OK sure, in the beginning I know that somebody though that “drone” sounded a lot cooler than “model airplane”.
Its exactly the kind of thing the model airplane geeks I know would adapt instantly. Not to mention, I’m sure selling “drones” is a lot easier than selling “remote control model helicopters”.
(In the interest of search engine optimization and my penchant for hypocrisy, I am however going to refer to RC model helicopters as drones for the remainder of this article.)
Bart: Milhouse, this is boring. Make it crash or something.
Milhouse: Perfectly level flying is the supreme challenge of the scale model pilot.
Nikon’s Big Week for Announcements: Two Mirrorless Cameras and One Big Lens
Nikon’s been getting pretty busy this week with their announcements. Two new mirrorless cameras are now headed our way, along with a new telephoto lens. And unless you plan on opening a meth lab and making bank off your experience in chemistry, you might want to just stop reading when you reach the last mirrorless camera; the telephoto lens costs quite a bit. We’ll over the basics of what to expect from each after the break.
