Ten years after its announcement, the Canon 5D Mark IV is marked as discontinued overseas. In the US, bodies are still available at the moment. They’re currently discounted to $2,000, which is almost certainly a sign that remaining stock is being cleared. If you’ve been sitting on the fence, now would be the time to move.

The Mark IV was announced on 25 August 2016 as the successor to the 5D Mark III, and it landed with a serious spec sheet. It featured a 61-point AF system inherited from the flagship EOS-1D X Mark II, Dual Pixel CMOS AF for both stills and video, DCI 4K video recording, a fully touch-enabled LCD screen, and built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. At launch it retailed for $3,499 body only, so the current $2,000 price tag is quite a deal for a camera that still holds up well.
Perhaps the most important change over the Mark III was a brand-new full-frame sensor. In place of the earlier 22.3-megapixel chip, the Mark IV’s sensor bumped resolution up to 30.4 megapixels. Combined with the DIGIC 6+ processor, it also pushed continuous shooting from 6fps to 7fps, and expanded the native ISO range from 25,600 to 32,000.

The camera won multiple industry awards in 2017. The Technical Image Press Association awarded it Best Full-Frame DSLR Expert, the European Imaging and Sound Association named it Professional DSLR Camera 2017–2018, and Imaging Resource selected it as Best Professional DSLR of 2016.
It wasn’t perfect, however. The 4K video came with a 1.74x crop factor and used Motion JPEG compression, which put off serious video shooters. Rolling shutter was also quite problematic for video. But as a stills camera, few argued with the results. A decade later, professional photographers still use it with great results.
If you want one, this could be the last chance to get it, at least if you’re buying new. Once the remaining bodies sell out overseas, the US supply most likely won’t last long either.
