Build the easiest DIY ring light ever for less than $20

We have shared plenty of great ideas for making your own DIY ring light.  Now, another cheap and quick solution comes from The Lighting Channel. They have shared a tutorial on making your own ring light using only three items, and it’s all done in a couple of minutes. And it’s not only quick and easy to make, but the components will cost you less than $20.

You will need:

  • White LED strip
  • White plastic drain hose
  • White gaff tape
  • Scotch tape (optional)

How to make:

The process of making is simple and really quick.

Start by folding the LED strip so it has lights on both sides. If the strip doesn’t have a sticky back, use some Scotch tape to fix it.

Then, put the LED strip through the draining pipe and fix it with white tape. Finally, shape the pipe in a circle, and seal everything with the white tape.

Once you’ve fixed the circle, that’s all. Plug the LED strip in, hang the light onto the camera and snap the photos.

The guys from The Lighting Channel used the “AI lighting” theme for this ring light because it creates tiny circles in the model’s eyes that add a bit of the unnatural look. To enhance this mood further, they used daylight LEDs which have blueish tone. Of course, you can fix the tone in-camera or in post-processing.

This is definitely one of the simplest DIY ring light ideas I’ve seen so far. Judging from the video, it seems it even gives decent results. So if you’re looking for a cheap and easy ring light solution to make at home, you can try this one out. And if you do, don’t forget to send us the result.
