Canon R8 Mark II Brings 7.5-Stop IBIS and 6K-Oversampled 4K to an Under-18oz Body

Canon EOS R8 Mark II has just been announced. At $1,899, you’re getting a 24.2MP full-frame sensor, 7.5 stops of IBIS, and 4K 60p 10-bit video in a body that weighs under 18oz (500 grams for my metric crew). If you shoot travel, weddings, or content and hate carrying a heavy kit, this camera is worth a closer look.

The headline upgrade over the original R8 is stabilization. The R8 had none. The Mark II brings a 5-axis IBIS system rated to 7.5 stops at the center. Pair it with a stabilized RF lens and you’re in usable territory for run-and-gun work.

Burst shooting also got a real boost. You get 40 fps continuous, plus a pre-capture mode that starts buffering when you half-press the shutter. Buffer capacity is up 30% for RAW and 55% for JPEG over the original. That’s 73 uninterrupted RAW frames or 190 JPEGs.

Autofocus runs on Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 4,368 AF points and full frame coverage. The low-light limit hits -7.5 EV, which is impressive on paper. The camera also packs Register People Priority: you can pre-register specific faces and the camera will bias focus toward them. For wedding photographers working crowded rooms, that’s a really practical tool. Subject detection covers people, animals, and vehicles across stills and video.

Video specs are solid for the price. The 6K-oversampled 4K up to 60p with 10-bit color gives you clean footage without external recorders. Canon Log 3 with 14 stops of dynamic range is available if you want grading flexibility. A major limitation is the single SD UHS-II card slot. For professional video work, that stings a little, though the target buyer here is probably not a professional video crew.

Connectivity-wise, there’s a micro-HDMI port, USB-C for power and data, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and UVC support, so it even works as a webcam out of the box.
