Canon just hit a major milestone in the camera world: the company has officially manufactured a whopping 170 million RF and EF interchangeable lenses for its EOS series. With this number, the company is extending its previous world record for the highest number of interchangeable lenses ever produced.
A Legacy That Began in 1987
Canon introduced the EF lens lineup in 1987 alongside its EOS autofocus SLR cameras. Since then, the EF lineup has led the industry with several firsts, like Ultrasonic Motors, Image Stabilizer (IS) tech, and even a multilayered Diffractive Optical (DO) element.
In 2018, Canon launched its mirrorless RF system, designed for better image quality and faster communication between the lens and camera. Together, the RF and EF systems now span 108 different models and focal lengths ranging from ultra-wide 10mm to a telescopic 1200mm.
So, What’s the Big Deal?
In a world where smartphone cameras are snapping at the heels of traditional DSLRs and mirrorless systems, reaching 170 million units is no small feat. Canon’s lenses have been used by everyone – from your neighbor Joe to renowned National Geographic photographers. The company now produces its lenses across five manufacturing sites, including facilities in Japan, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
Previous milestones include “10 million units produced by 1995 and 50 million by 2009,” Canon writes in the press release.
“Then in 2014, Canon became the first company in the world to reach 100 million interchangeable camera lenses produced. In October 2025, the company reached 170 million units, leading to the achievement of this world record.”

The 170 millionth lens produced was the RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z. This solid piece of gear is great for sports, wildlife, and event shooters.
Innovation and VR
Over the years, Canon has rolled out VR lenses, hybrid designs for photo and video, and lenses that work with power zoom adapters. In short, they’re catering to creators who bounce between shooting weddings, vlogs, and virtual reality content (sometimes all in the same weekend).
Notably, in 2021, Canon launched the EOS VR System, blending mirrorless tech with 3D 180° video capabilities. Then in 2024, it released hybrid lenses with unified designs for easier handling across models. The RF 85mm F1.4 L VCM, launched in September 2025, marked the fifth in that series.
What’s Next?
Canon isn’t stopping at 170 million. The company plans to keep the streak alive by refining its imaging tech and lens lineup. So yes, 170 million might sound like a dry number. But for photographers, videographers, and tech nerds alike, it’s a reminder that Canon’s lens game is still going strong.
