At IBC 2025, Blackmagic Design unveiled something that has filmmakers buzzing: full ProRes RAW support for the iPhone 17 and a new Camera Pro Dock that transforms Apple’s latest phone into a professional production tool. For years, creators have pushed the boundaries of what smartphones can achieve, but now, with Apple’s hardware leap and Blackmagic’s ecosystem, the iPhone 17 is stepping confidently into cinema-grade territory.
The combination of Apple’s ProRes RAW capabilities and Blackmagic’s tools is almost a workflow revolution. From powering multi-camera shoots with genlock and timecode to delivering seamless editing inside DaVinci Resolve, these updates bridge the gap between mobile and professional filmmaking like never before.
iPhone 17 Meets Blackmagic’s Pro Dock
Apple’s new iPhone 17 range puts an emphasis on filmmaking, introducing ProRes RAW recording and expanded video control. But as powerful as the phone is, it’s still limited by its single USB-C port and lack of professional inputs. That’s where Blackmagic’s Camera Pro Dock comes in.
The dock solves the iPhone’s biggest shortcomings. It provides stable power during shoots, ensures you’re not relying on the phone’s battery, and adds support for external storage, so massive ProRes RAW files no longer clog your internal memory. Filmmakers can also feed video to an external monitor or a video village instead of being stuck with the iPhone’s small screen. Perhaps most importantly, the dock introduces genlock and timecode inputs, which allow multiple iPhones, or even a mix of cameras, to be synced perfectly.
Resolve and Hardware Integration
On the post-production side, Blackmagic has updated DaVinci Resolve to fully support ProRes RAW, with the upgrade available on both Mac and Windows. This means filmmakers can take iPhone 17 footage straight into Resolve and unlock all the dynamic range and grading possibilities of ProRes RAW. For creators already invested in Resolve, this closes a long-standing gap and makes iPhone footage genuinely viable in professional workflows.
Blackmagic is also expanding support beyond the iPhone. ProRes RAW will arrive on the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K which is a hugely popular entry-level camera, and on the Video Assist 12G lineup, creating more flexibility across the ecosystem. Add to that the free Blackmagic Camera App, now available for both iOS and Android, and the company is clearly building a connected set of tools that makes it easier for creators to move between devices and workflows without friction.
The Bigger Picture for Filmmakers
The Camera Pro Dock is priced at $299.95, which is surprisingly reasonable considering the functionality it unlocks. For filmmakers, this small piece of hardware means an iPhone 17 can step onto a professional set and hold its own in multi-camera productions. Essentially, it’s about opening creative options that were previously restricted to higher-end cinema gear. Watch the interview below for more details:
