The “InstaPocket” camera doesn’t exist, but it should

Digital cameras have seen all kinds of design changes over the last 25 years or so. Ultimately, we seem to have landed largely on two form factors. We’ve got the mirrorless form factor, similar to DSLRs and SLRs of the past. And then we’ve got the smartphone.
It’s rare that we see a dedicated camera in the shape of a smartphone instead of just an addition to a smartphone, but it does happen. The InstaPocket by Eslam Mohamed Hassan and Ahmed Elminshawy is another, but sadly, this one’s just a beautiful concept camera.
InstaPocket – A slimline camera you can take anywhere
I’m actually a bit disappointed that this thing isn’t real. Yes, we’ve all got smartphones with cameras built into them, but the problem is that most camera apps suck, and sometimes I want a small camera that isn’t dependent on the Internet that I can get lost with in the wilderness.
In fairness, that’s why I kept my OnePlus 7 Pro around, but still, the InstaPocket has such a slick design that I could definitely see myself getting one of these as a pocket-sized travel camera that can slip into any slim pouch on your backpack.

The image above actually suggests to me that we might not be far off getting a camera like this. With some of the action camera designs we’ve seen released over the last few years, this concept could become a contender. Having such a small form factor camera, especially with a wrist strap, would be great for things like hiking and camping.
Other than the terrible app situation, I suppose the biggest issue with using your phone is the three million notifications that seem to come up every time we remove it from our pockets. With a camera like this, they wouldn’t come up. You’d just be able to pull it out and shoot without seeing them.

Despite not having full smartphone capabilities, it’s envisioned running the Instagram app. And with a name like InstaPocket, one could hardly expect it not to be, really. Even if it is limited to just the one app, it’s still a beautiful design. You can check out the complete set of concept images on Behance.
I still think we might see this kind of form factor at some point from an action camera manufacturer. Alas, for now, we’ll have to stick with our old backup phones. Cleaned of bloatware, void of SIM cards, just running the bare basics so we can fill them with as many images and video clips as possible!
