Commercial photographer, Lauri Laukkanen, was recently presented with the opportunity to travel to Iceland with a loaner Phase One 645df+ and IQ260 digital back (a $40,000 setup and, as the Finland based photographer refers to it, “a 60 megapixel monster of a camera”) to capture some images for a composite photography project.

The project took him to Iceland, where he spent his time exploring and taking the images used in the background of the image you see above. (It’s obvious why Iceland is fast becoming a hotspot for photographers–stunning landscapes!).  Once Laukkanen was back home in Finland, he photographed the model in his studio using a background plate from his Iceland trip to help perfect the lighting.

Once all the photos were captured, Laukkanen sent them over to fellow photographer, Hannes Honkanen, to handle the image retouching. Once all was said and done, the duo had a final image that weighs in at an impressive 15,000 x 9,000 pixels.

He also wrote a great write up on the experience, complete with lighting diagrams, over on his blog; in the meantime, you can check out his behind the scenes footage, right here:

And a quick rundown of how the images were composited together…
