ZEISS Returns to Still Photography After 5+ Years with New 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 Lenses

After more than five years without a still photography release, ZEISS is back with two new prime lenses: the Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 and Otus ML 85mm f/1.4. These manual-focus lenses are designed for Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts, offering pro-level optics in a more compact design.
In 2023, rumors spread that Zeiss was leaving the photography industry after an Australian distributor suggested the company had exited the market. Zeiss quickly denied this, stating that they were still making and selling photo lenses. However, they acknowledged that the market had declined sharply since the start of the pandemic, forcing them to adjust their strategy. While continuing to support their traditional lenses, Zeiss has also expanded into mobile imaging.
In early 2024, the company introduced the Nano Prime series. Still not traditional photography, though, as these are T1.5 cine lenses designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. And now, finally, after a long break in photography, we can say that ZEISS is back. So, let’s check out what the new photo lenses have to offer.
ZEISS Otus ML 85mm f/1.4: Built for portrait photographers
The Otus ML 85mm f/1.4 is aimed at those who need a high-quality medium telephoto lens, particularly for portraits. Its wide f/1.4 aperture helps separate subjects from backgrounds, while an aspherical optical design and ZEISS Sonnar engineering work to control aberrations and improve sharpness.
As an apochromatic lens, it reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations, aiming for more accurate color reproduction. A mix of Sonnar and Distagon optical elements enhances contrast and edge-to-edge sharpness. The ZEISS T* coating helps control flare and ghosting in difficult lighting conditions.
Focusing is fully manual, with a long 260° focus throw to allow for precise adjustments. The internal focusing mechanism means the lens does not extend or retract while focusing. A de-clicked aperture ring allows smooth, silent exposure changes, which is useful for video work.
The lens is built with an all-metal housing for durability. A blue sealing ring at the mount helps keep out dust and moisture. ZEISS also claims the lens is designed to function in temperatures ranging from -4°F to 130°F.

ZEISS Otus ML 50mm f/1.4: A classic focal length with a modern design
The Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 follows the same design principles as the 85mm but in a more versatile focal length. A 50mm lens is often a go-to choice for a variety of photography styles, including portraits, documentary work, and general shooting.
Like the 85mm, this lens features an apochromatic design to reduce chromatic aberrations and improve color accuracy. The combination of Distagon and Sonnar elements aims to deliver high contrast and sharpness, and the ZEISS T* coating helps control reflections and flare.
The 50mm f/1.4 also features a 260° focus throw and an internal focusing system. The de-clicked aperture control is included for those who need smooth exposure transitions when recording video.
The build quality matches the 85mm, with an all-metal body and a blue sealing ring for dust and moisture resistance. It is also rated for operation in extreme temperatures.
