When it comes to cameras, Z-Cam feels like the new kid on the block. Before NAB earlier this year, nobody had heard of them, and now they seem to be everywhere. Recently, they announced three new flagship cameras, the E2-S6 6K, E2-F6 6K and E2-F8 8K so we stopped by their stand at IBC 2019 to find out more about them.
The three cameras boast an impressive set of features. The Z-Cam E2-S6 contains a Super 35mm sensor which shoots 6K video at up to 60 frames per second. The E2-F6 and E2-F8 both house full-frame sensors with 6K and 8K resolution respectively, with battery life from a Sony NP-F style battery lasting several hours.
When it comes to the codecs used in the camera, the 6K cameras can shoot ProRes up to 30 frames per second, and h.265 for faster frame rates, as well as ZRAW – Z-Cam’s own partially debayered proprietary RAW format. While nothing supports ZRAW at the moment, Z-Cam says they are in discussions to add native support to popular editing applications. Z-Cam does have their own software for it, so you’d need to process in that and transcode to a more friendly format for editing.
The E2-F6 and E2-F8 full-frame models will support user interchangeable mounts, so you can switch between Canon EF and PL mounts at will. This opens you up to a pretty wide range of possible lens options. When you’re doing big fancy productions, you can go with the higher end PL cinema lenses, and when you’re going a bit more run and gun you can switch out to the EF mount.
