Today Tiffen announced that the Lowel Pro Power LED is now available for purchase (at $600). Tiffen says that its perfect for the photographer with on-the-go shooting and small location setups. I am constantly on-the-go and lugging around studio lights gets to be a bit cumbersome. Lets see what they have done to make this setup different.

The first thing I take into consideration when walking out the door and what to take with me is size. This Pro Power LED isn’t a very big light because it only weighs 3.3 lbs w/barndoors. It’s made to be small and mobile and be run off AC or DC Battery system and can be stand mounted or hand held.

Usually when you have a smaller light you don’t get the power you need out of it when it counts. This comes with a wide focus range fresnel lens which allows the photographer to tighten the beam and focus more power on specific subject or widen the beam for better wide coverage. This would have worked great for my shoot today that was center ice in an arena with a group of 20 huddled around a Zamboni. One of those moments you don’t want to be carrying a lot of gear but arena lighting can be spotty.

They have 2 models of the Pro Power LED. Daylight or Tungsten models that both come with barndoor light controls out of the box. The diagram from Lowel/Tiffen below shows output of the different models.Screen Shot 2014-12-11 at 11.08.54 AM

The option to purchase the DC Battery system for more mobility as well as quite a few different light modifiers are definitely easy to add to the cart.

Lastly the light supports a range of accessories via a weird mount – if only it was a standard speedring it would have been perfect.

Overall the system looks small enough to carry around in a bag. It won’t kill the assistant to be holding it for long periods of time. Gives plenty of power and the option to focus the light and use light controls to fine tune it even more, all at an affordable price.

Lowel Pro Power LED is available for purchase on Amazon and on the Tiffen website.
