This is why you shouldn’t throw away smashed ND filters

What would you do if your ND filter got severely cracked? Throw it away, of course. But don’t do it just yet – you can still make something awesome with it even when it’s broken beyond repair. Photographer Parker Rice experimented with a smashed filter and he got some really cool effect in his photos.

Parker opened his camera bag to find that his ND filter had been smashed. “I almost tossed it out but decided to see what the results could be,” he writes. It turned out to be a good decision, and this is the result:

“If you have a hard light source blasting into the lens, it can yield some really cool effects,” this Redditor explains. It’s like turning your good ol’ ND filter into one of those creative filters that give a completely new look to the image. Be careful though as you don’t want the cracked glass to scratch any of your gear. You can add a UV filter before the broken ND, or secure the broken glass with some Scotch tape.

Of course, Parker ordered a new ND filter from amazon. Still, the broken one didn’t end up in a bin, but it can be used to add some dreamy effect to future photos. So, if you ever crack a filter, perhaps it’s still worth shooting through it. With extra care, of course, but the results may surprise you.

Check out Parker’s work on his website, Facebook, and Instagram.
