The Kandao QooCam EGO is the best hope so far for mass adoption of compact 3D cameras

3D cameras have fascinated me for years. When I was a kid, my parents had one of those View-Masters. Actually, they had hundreds of them (they owned a bunch of toy shops) but they gave one to me and I’d sit and stare through its binocular viewfinder for hours looking at all the different reels.

3D viewing technology’s come a long way since then, but the fascination never faded. I have a couple of small all-in-one 3D cameras, like the Weeview SID (review here) and Insta360 EVO. Some of you might remember the Kandao QooCam EGO 3D camera launching on Kickstarter a couple of months ago. Well, now I have one, and I’ve been putting it through its paces.

The QooCam EGO is a stereo 3D VR camera offering headset-free “instant immersion”

Kandao has launched its new QooCam EGO camera. Claiming to be “the World’s first 3D camera for instant immersion”, this small handheld camera features a pair of lenses and sensors for capturing two viewpoints simultaneously. This concept isn’t new, and there have been plenty of devices in the past that can do this like the Insta360 EVO and the Weeview SID, but this is the first that offers easy and instant 3D playback on the spot.

The two camera and lens positions simulate the viewpoint from a pair of eyes, thus capturing two different perspectives. When viewed back with one camera’s view per eye, our brain recreates it in 3D. It’s a concept that seems to have been slow to pick up amongst consumers, mostly due to the lack of easy viewing and the QooCam EGO aims to solve this by allowing the user to quickly and easily view and share their 3D footage after it’s been shot.

Small compact camera technology and tiny sensors have come a long way in the last few years. This is largely due to the advancement of smartphone cameras. But the benefits that those small sensors bring to the table can also be applied to other cameras. Cameras like those which can record 3D video in a package that easily fits in your pocket. The Weeview SID 3D is one such camera, and I’ve had one for the last few weeks.

If there’s one thing that’s definitely not going away, it’s 360 VR cameras. And they’ve come a very long way in the last few years. It was only 2016, two short years ago, when the Ricoh Theta S was being lauded as one of the best on the consumer market – with 1080p video. But as the technology has become a little more established, demands have evolved.

Detu is answering these demands with the new Detu MAX. A 3D 360° VR camera that can shoot stereo video at a whopping 8K resolution. It’s also capable of shooting HDR 3D images and offers stills resolutions up to 12K. They’re launching the MAX on Kickstarter, with prices up to 40% off the expected retail price.

One day, humans will probably land on Mars and take photos, like Apollo astronauts did on the Moon. But probably not in our lifetime. So photographer and videographer Jan Fröjdman created a fictive flight above Mars using real images of the “red planet”. He has hand-picked reference points on anaglyph images from the HiRISE camera. It took over 33,000 reference points and 3 months to create the film, but it was worth it. Jan has created a mesmerizing video. Are you ready to explore Mars?

Today, as is the case most days, I check out my phone to see that I have an app update.  Given the number of iOS apps I’ve used over the years that have suddenly become useless, unstable, or removed significant features with newer versions, I’ve disabled automatic app updates.

Upon seeing that an update was available for the YouTube app, what a joy it was to see that they’ve finally added Google Cardboard support for both 360 degree videos using the phone’s built in accelerometers, as well as 3D video!
