While we wait for the grand finale in April, the Sony World Photography Awards has revealed the shortlisted photographers of the Student and Youth competitions for 2026. Organized by the World Photography Organisation, these categories shine a spotlight on the photographers of tomorrow. Take a look at the highlights from this year’s inspiring Student and Youth shortlists, celebrating creativity, curiosity, and fresh visual storytelling.
Now in its 19th year, the Sony World Photography Awards remains a global platform for emerging talent. The 2026 Student and Youth competitions once again demonstrate how young photographers around the world are engaging with both personal and universal themes, using photography as a powerful tool for connection and expression.
Student Competition
The Student Competition awards outstanding series by photography students aged 18 to 30. For the 2026 edition, photographers responded to the brief Together, submitting a series of five to ten images that explored ideas of connection, community, and shared experience.
This year’s Student Competition Shortlist features the work of ten students from leading universities across the globe. Their projects interpret togetherness in diverse and thoughtful ways. They range from intimate family relationships and personal stories to broader reflections on neighborhoods, social spaces, and collective identity. I love how each of us interprets togetherness in our own way, and it shows in these photos as well.
The winner of Student Photographer of the Year 2026 will be selected from this shortlist and announced at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony in London on 16 April. In addition to the individual accolade, the winning photographer’s university will receive Sony gear worth €30,000.
Youth Competition
The Youth Competition celebrates the best single images taken by photographers aged 19 and under. For 2026, the Youth category was run as an Open Call. In other words, young photographers submitted their strongest work without a set theme.
The resulting shortlist is wonderfully diverse. Across the ten selected images, young photographers capture serene natural landscapes, striking wildlife moments, architectural harmony, and scenes balancing motion and stillness. Overall, the Youth Competition Shortlist shows remarkable technical skill and creative confidence at such an early stage of life and career.
The Youth Photographer of the Year 2026 will also be chosen from the shortlist and announced during the April awards ceremony. The winner will receive Sony gear to support their continued creative journey.
Looking Ahead To The 2026 Winners
The Student and Youth shortlists offer a compelling preview of the next generation of photographic talent. The overall winners in the Student, Youth, Open, and Professional competitions will be revealed on 16 April at the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony in London.
Until then, the 2026 Student and Youth shortlists invite us to pause, look closer, and appreciate how young photographers are shaping the future of visual storytelling.
