Wireless microphone systems have really blown up in the last five years, each bringing better audio quality and features designed for simple field recording. The Sennheiser Profile Wireless is not unlike many of its competitors – promising ease of use and a plethora of features that are intended to make field recording and content creation as easy as hitting record, but does it suffer from trying to be a jack-of-all-trades system instead of excelling at being a great wireless mic?

Hands-on with the Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic System

The Profile Wireless is a compact, all-in-one 2.4 GHz digital system built around a portable charging bar that stores a two-channel receiver and two clip-on transmitters. Out of the box, you also get USB-C and Lightning phone adapters, a cold shoe for cameras, windscreens, magnets/clips, a TRS cable, and a pouch. No app is required, and the transmitters come pre-paired. In other words, charge it, plug it in, and roll.

Under the hood, you’re looking at 48 kHz/24-bit digital audio, an omni electret capsule in each transmitter, and creator-friendly recording modes: mono, stereo, and a Safety Channel output that prints a lower-level backup to help catch peaks. There’s also 16 GB of onboard memory per transmitter—good for up to ~30 hours of internal recording—plus an “auto backup” mode that starts local recording if the RF link hiccups. Rated latency is < eight milliseconds, line-of-sight range up to 245 meters, and battery life up to seven hours per unit.

But the biggest feature of the Sennheiser Profile Wireless System is its charging bar: it tops up the system (2,000 mAh battery), organizes all the peripherals, and—when fitted with its foam—becomes a handheld mic for roving interviews. This is a game-changer for the solo creator or small teams I’m a part of during events like weddings and church services. The ability to nest the transmitters into their charging slots and then turn the entire system into a wireless handheld system turns the Profile Wireless System into three mic systems in one.

During my review period, I made it a point to use the Profile Wireless Mic system as the only external mic system when covering events, shooting bts and review content, and even for livestreaming (gaming). In these situations, the Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic delivered reliable, high-quality audio that didn’t require messing around with dongles or apps. I largely found that the system had reliable battery life and could be used with confidence throughout any given day, thanks to the charging bar.

While the Profile wireless system is rated for up to 245 meters, I never found myself walking that far away from my camera – I wouldn’t want my camera to grow legs. But I did find that for the typical vlogger-style video or one-camera interview, the signal was consistent and rarely, if ever, dropped. Even if there were a potential problem when recording audio to video, the Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic System does have the option to record internally, giving you a backup recording feature that’s good for up to 30 hours of audio recording. As a somewhat perfectionist professional, the option to capture backup audio helped me feel at ease with each shot, take, and stream.

All of this isn’t to say that the Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic System isn’t without its flaws. For starters, the Profile wireless mic system opts for a very clean, minimalist design that limits physical controls to a single On/Off button and a very tiny, and narrow touch display on the Receiver. Though the swipe gestures are intuitive, the tiny display can make navigation a serious issue if you have big hands, are wearing gloves, or are trying to quickly make changes on the fly.

Additionally, if you’re using headphones to monitor your audio, expect some delays. In my testing at a recent pop-up event, I experienced a noticeable delay between the mic receiving a signal and the transmitter processing and sending it out to my headphones. That said, this quirk seems limited to monitoring, as the audio was captured correctly in the final video.

Lastly, if you prefer the cleaner look that a proper lav mic offers, be prepared to spend some extra coin. The Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic system comes with just about every connection imaginable, but no lav mics – even though the transmitter packs have a lockable mic line in.

How the Sennheiser Profile Wireless Mic System Stacks Up

In the world of portable, wireless mobile solutions, the Sennheiser stands out by affording users a wealth of connectivity options, solid noise reduction, easy setup and operation, and great battery life all in a unique and compact package. While options from competitors like DJI and RODE might have an even more discreet look and “pro” features, the Profile Wireless System can more than hold its own. If you’re looking for an option that allows you to work in various environments and provides the flexibility to be used as a lapel or handheld mic, the Sennheiser Profile system is the one to watch. You can pick up the two-channel Profile Wireless for $299 USD, which includes the charging bar, receiver, two transmitters, and the accessory suite.

Is there a reason every post is showing up twice on my feed. Most of the time they are one after the other.

Noise reduction. I thought it doesn’t have it yet you say it does?
