Samyang, also known as Rokinon in some parts of the world, has announced a new full frame 45mm f/1.8 compact autofocus lens for Sony E mount. Samyang says that it’s been designed specifically for Sony mirrorless cameras and isn’t just a rehash of another lens with a new mount. It is their third compact lens and seventh autofocus lens designed for Sony mirrorless.

  • Focal length: 45mm
  • Format: full frame
  • Mount: Sony E
  • Max aperture: f/1.8
  • Min aperture: f/1.8
  • Diaphragm blades: 9
  • Optics: 7 elements in 6 groups (2 Aspherical, 1 Extra-low Dispersion)
  • Minimum focus distance: 45cm (17.7″)
  • Filter size: 49mm
  • Dimensions: 56.1 x 61.8mm (2.21 x 2.43″)
  • Weight: 162g (5.71oz)

The lens is constructed from 7 elements in 6 groups. Two Aspherical and one Extra-low Dispersion elements with Ultra Multi-Coating, says Samyang, are used to “effectively control vignetting, distortion and chromatic aberration”.

They say that the design has been optimised for portability and compactness while offering the durability of a metal barrel. It claims quiet and accurate autofocus and is “the perfect lens to live on your Sony camera always”.

Samyang posted some sample images shot with the lens to their website to give you an idea of the kind of thing you can get at minimum focus distance, as well as how the out of focus areas look on a portrait shot wide open. It doesn’t look that bad, actually.

The new Samyang 45mm f/1.8 FE lens is available to pre-order now for $399 and should be shipping out sometime this month.

Still quite a bit bigger than its beloved Konica counterpart. But the IQ wide open is probably much better too… :)
