Ricoh GR IV HDF

Ricoh has expanded its GR IV lineup with two new variants of its compact street camera. Welcome Ricoh GR IV HDF and the Ricoh GR IV with the built-in ND (neutral density) filter. The core specs remain unchanged, but you can now choose between the ND filter for managing bright light or a new Highlight Diffusion Filter (HDF) that adds a dreamy, nostalgic look to your photos.

Two New Filters, Two Distinct Looks

Both versions share the same body and internals as the original GR IV, but each adds a different fixed filter in front of the lens:

  • The ND filter version is ideal for photographers who often shoot in bright conditions. It helps control exposure without changing aperture or shutter speed. It’s perfect for maintaining a shallow depth of field or avoiding overexposure during midday shoots. It’s also useful for long exposure shots in daylight.
  • The Ricoh GR IV HDF version introduces a creative Highlight Diffusion Filter that renders highlights with a soft, blurred glow. The result? A more ethereal, nostalgic feel straight out of camera, without the need for post-processing.

From what I’ve seen, those soft and dreamy photos are the aesthetics that Gen Z particularly loves. So, this camera could appeal to the younger generation of photographers. But if you’re more into tack-sharp photos, worry not: the HDF can be turned on or off with a dedicated rear Fn button labeled “HDF.” That button is fully customizable, and the HDF toggle can be reassigned elsewhere if needed. A silver shutter release button also sets the HDF model apart visually.

Everything Else You Love Stays the Same

Beyond the filter, both Ricoh GR IV versions keep all the hardware and software upgrades that came with the original GR IV. That includes the 25.7MP BSI APS-C sensor, GR ENGINE 7 processor, improved autofocus, and the 5-axis image stabilization system. You’ll also get the new GR WORLD mobile app, which offers wireless control, file transfer, and location tagging via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3.

The camera keeps its fast and compact 28mm f/2.8 equivalent lens, 53GB internal memory, upgraded DB-120 battery, and redesigned control layout, including a more intuitive dial in place of the older ADJ lever.

In short, the GR IV HDF and the ND filter versions both have what fans already loved about the GR IV… But now with a little extra glow.

Pricing And Availability

The Ricoh GR IV HDF is priced at $1,596.95, $100 more than the ND version which will set you back $1,496.95. It’s available now for preorder, with shipping expected soon (but no exact date yet). I also see the monochrome version listed on B&H, but there is no pricing info yet.
