For filmmakers who want to buy an entry-level cine camera, RED Raven may be a good choice. However, it’s not available on RED’s website any longer, but they’ll need to head over to Apple store.
The camera will be available as a kit online and in selected retail stores. And while RED is developing their own smartphone, this seems like a beginning of an interesting cooperation between the two companies.
When you visit the RED Raven web page, you’ll get the photos, videos, and specs of the camera. However, when you click “Shop Now” or “Camera Kit Details,” the links take you to the Apple store, where you can see the specs and the full pricing of the kit.
The kit provides you with practically everything you need to start filming “out of the box.” It contains the following components:
- RED RAVEN 4.5K camera brain
- Content code* for Final Cut Pro X
- RED DSMC2 Touch LCD 4.7” Monitor
- RED DSMC2 Outrigger handle
- RED V-Lock I/O expander
- RED MINI-MAG 120GB
- Two IDX DUO C-95 batteries with charger
- G-Technology ev Series MINI-MAG reader
- Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC lens
- NANUK heavy-duty camera case
This camera is not for the filmmaking beginners, but more for those who already have experience in filmmaking, but want to buy their first cine camera. Along with the kit, you get the Final Cut Pro X, which allows you to work quickly and easily with RED RAVEN footage on Mac notebook and desktop systems.
On the minus side, there is no camera body available separately. It’s only available as the suggested kit, so if you want it, you have to get all together for $15,000. You can still get additional modules, but for that, you’ll need to head back to RED’s website.
