Pope Francis’ personal Leica M‑A camera sold for an astonishing €6.5 million (roughly $7.4 million) at a charity auction, far exceeding its original estimate.
When Leica presented Pope Francis with a one‑of‑a‑kind Leica M‑A (serial number 5,000,000) and a matching Noctilux‑M 50 mm f/1.2 lens in 2024, few could have anticipated the price it would later fetch.
Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, at age 88. Known for his humility and commitment to social justice, he chose to auction this very camera through his foundation, turning a symbol of prestige into a tool for helping others.
The camera, auctioned by Leitz Photographica, shattered expectations and became one of the most expensive Leicas ever sold.
To put it in perspective, a typical Leica M‑A (Typ 127) sells for just a few thousand dollars. But this particular model, customized and stamped with papal significance, reached a price normally reserved for historical prototypes or ultra-rare limited editions.

A Highly Personalized Leica
This Leica set was not just any collector’s item. The entire kit, including camera body, lens, presentation box, carries the special serial number 5,000,000, symbolically reserved for this gift.
The camera body is finished in silver chrome with a distinctive white covering, white-painted base plate, back doors, and control elements.
Engravings made to honor the Pope include the Keys of Peter on the flash cover and his pontifical motto, Miserando atque eligendo (“lowly but chosen”), on the top plate. The matching lens is also chrome and trimmed in gold and white, and both caps are engraved with the Vatican City Coat of Arms.
The year the gift was made, 2024, appears in Roman numerals (A.D. MMXXIV) on both pieces.

Why It Went for So Much
The sale’s final price of €6.5 million dramatically exceeded the €60,000 to €70,000 ($70,000 to $80,000) estimate.
That massive multiple reflects not just the rarity of the item, but also its strong emotional and symbolic value. Beyond being a beautifully crafted Leica, this was a personal papal gift, auctioned in keeping with Pope Francis’ lifelong dedication to charity.
According to the auction house, no buyer’s premium was added to the winning bid, meaning the full hammer price goes to good causes.
This Leica is also tied to Leica’s tradition of gifting cameras with special serial numbers to prominent figures, but few have the same depth of personalization. Only a handful of Leica lots have ever sold for as much.
