OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro pay tribute to Hassleblad Xpan, add Xpan camera mode

OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro were announced earlier this year, and now they’re getting a major update. Their camera was co-engineered with Hasselblad, and now both phones are getting a dedicated Hasselblad Xpan shooting mode. Paying a tribute to the unique film camera, the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro can now simulate the look of the Xpan.

The XPan was a unique and innovative camera. It used 35mm film, but allowed users to switch between formats. It could produce both full panorama 24x65mm format and the conventional 24x36mm format without changing the film. It was the first dual-format 35mm camera on the market and there were about 16,800 XPan cameras produced between 1998 and 2002.

As for the OnePlus 9’s Xpan mode, it aims to replicate not only the film look but the entire experience of shooting with this unique camera. And just like the company worked with Hasselblad to design the camera, they did so to create the Xpan shooting mode, too.

When you choose the Xpan mode in your camera app, you can choose between 30mm and 45mm focal lengths. The panoramic mode shoots 65:24 images which are made from cropped photos captured with the 48MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide camera. If you choose the 30mm lens simulation, you’ll get 7552 × 2798 resolution images, and the 45mm lens simulation gives you shots of 7872 × 2916 resolution.

Since there’s a choice between black and white and color 35mm film – there’s the same choice with the Xpan mode. What I find pretty cool is that you get to see the image being “developed” from a negative to a finished shot. If you’ve never shot film before, can give you a better idea of what the process looks like. Well, at least up to a point.

The Xpan mode will be available through a system update. So, if you want to get it, update your OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro and enjoy playing with the new feature.
