Nikon ZR firmware 1.10

If you shoot long-form video, you know the frustration of being cut off in the middle of a take. Nikon’s latest ZR firmware update, version 1.10, is designed to change that.

Now, the camera supports continuous video recording of up to 360 minutes, or six hours, in select formats.

For creators working on interviews, concerts, or documentaries, this update makes it easier to focus on the story instead of worrying about recording limits.

Longer Takes for Extended Projects

With firmware V1.10, the ZR allows uninterrupted recording in ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit, H.265 10-bit and 8-bit, and H.264 8-bit formats, excluding slow-motion frame rates above 100p. RAW recording remains capped at 125 minutes.

For productions that demand extended takes, the ability to keep the camera rolling for hours is a significant workflow improvement.

You can now capture performances, panel discussions, or multi-camera interviews without constantly stopping to start a new clip, which reduces interruptions and simplifies editing.

RED-style File Naming

Another highlight of the update is the adoption of RED camera file naming conventions.

The standard DSC format is replaced with a unique, video-specific naming system that helps you organize and track footage across multiple cameras and editors. These RED-style filenames are visible directly on the live view screen, making it easier for directors, DITs, and editors to manage data efficiently on set.

For multi-camera shoots, this can save a significant amount of time and reduce the risk of confusion during post-production.

Precision Exposure and Creative Control

Firmware 1.10 also improves exposure management. When recording in R3D NE 12-bit, a red highlight clipping warning appears on both the histogram and waveform monitor.

This visual reference shows the exact point of white clipping at the selected ISO, letting you correct exposure on the fly.

Combined with support for up to 50 LUTs from a memory card and the ability to record in R3D NE 12-bit even in AUTO mode, the update gives you enhanced creative flexibility without leaving the camera’s standard workflow.

Other Updates

For productions that require precise synchronization, the ZR now supports wired timecode input through the 3.5-mm microphone jack.

Jam-sync continues even if the connection is temporarily lost, resetting only when the camera is powered off. This removes the need for Bluetooth setups and ensures reliable, professional timecode alignment across multiple cameras.

Firmware V1.10 also introduces a Power-on Lamp Energy Saver feature, letting you monitor the camera’s power status at a glance. You can set the lamp to stay on or turn off automatically, preventing unexpected battery drain and ensuring that your camera is ready when you need it.

Overall, Nikon ZR firmware 1.10 addresses one of the most common limitations for long-form video creators: recording duration. If you regularly tackle complex shoots or multi-camera productions, this firmware brings practical features that can simplify your workflow and help you focus on capturing great footage.
