Nikon apologises for shipping delays with new Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S macro lens

I mean, yeah, ok, so there’s a global semiconductor shortage, but it always seems to be the same old story these days whenever any manufacturer releases a new lens. “There was higher demand than we expected!” is the usual excuse. Well, it’s Nikon’s turn again. No excuses this time, though. Just the facts.

While the shortage might be partially to blame this time around, Nikon has apologised in advance for delayed shipping of some pre-orders for the recently announced Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S macro lens for Z mount mirrorless cameras. They haven’t explicitly stated a reason for the delay, although there are only really two possible causes.

The first is the usual “unexpected demand” line, which is often nonsense, and would be particularly so for a lens like this. The 105mm f/2.8 Macro has been a solid staple for many photographers, not just macro shooters, through its various iterations over the years. And given that this is Nikon’s first macro lens for Z mount, high demand was going to be pretty obvious.

The other is the silicone shortage. But this is something they would have known about well in advance of actually mass manufacturing the product and declaring a shipping date.

Apology and notice of delay in delivery of NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f / 2.8 VR S

June 17, 2021 [Product Information]

Thank you for your continued patronage of Nikon products.

We have received a large number of reservations for the Nikkor lens “NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f / 2.8 VR S”, which is scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021 (Friday).

We may not be able to deliver the product on the day of release to some customers who are currently making reservations.
In addition, it may take some time for the product to be delivered to customers who make reservations in the future, as it will be delivered in sequence.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to customers who are waiting for our products.
We will do our utmost to deliver the product as soon as possible, and we appreciate your understanding.

– Nikon Statement

Well, I suppose there is a third potential cause. We all know Nikon is struggling. Perhaps the quantities manufactured are simply being limited to maximise early income without risking overspending on stock that might not sell for months.

Whatever the cause, if you want the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S lens, you’re likely going to be waiting a very long time to get your hands on one.
