I Wish All Lighting Diagrams Were That Awesome

If you are doing anything that has to do with lighting, you know the value of Lighting Diagrams and setup shots as a teaching tool (we use them a lot here on DIYP). But usually they are boring photos with descriptions of flash settings and iso points.
Photographer Joey Hernandez decided that no more! none of his set up shots is going to be boring and each one tells a funny story.
Joey tells DIYP that he shoots with a Canon 6D and a wide open 135L lens, which along with his lighting style give a pretty distinct look to his photos. And they go well with his witty descriptions. Joey will not shy away from describing a potential drug deal, or a letting you know that the hut around he corner is not a Pizza hut. That makes his diagrams a great learning tool, but also a great read with your “learn more lighting” morning coffee.

To see more of Joey’s work, you can visit his website, and say hi on his Facebook page, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and 500px

Good Stuff!!
I always love the effort he puts into his lighting diagrams.
How is he shooting with the shutter that high? HSS?
External light (and sometimes reflector) + wide open f/2
In spite off ISO 50.
I agree… it is impressive.
Right, lighting diagram totally useable… but no details on that sync speed? Wonder if they’re using hyper-sync or super-sync (different names by brand)
Every single lighting diagram has all the exif for the shot including the sync speed. The Rovelight uses HSS. That’s High Speed Sync.
Thank you. It seems the RoveLight has added HSS since launch, something it did not initially have. Makes me want the RoveLight that much more!
HSS man!
Jonny Hackett, you should do this with your BTS shots.
I think I saw that photographer’s post in the Strobist.com group!
Yup, that’s where I post them a lot!
Thanks for the article! If anyone has any questions feel free to message me on Facebook. I’m on there all the time!
Use the included TRX Radio Trigger to fire the strobe and adjust power remotely. The receiver is built into the X600 Lithium so no need to plug anything in. *This is not a HSS trigger. Strobepro will be releasing a HSS trigger in the coming months. We recommend the YN-622 if you need HSS.
Hello Francisco! How can your TRX Radio Trigger shoot HSS? Or do you use YN-622? I looked for Canadian version of this flash and found the note posted below
Or Adorama sold version has already HSS TRX Trigger?
Dustin Diaz used to post detailed lighting diagrams on Flickr. LONG TIME AGO!
