Five years ago, 3D was all the rage. Nowadays, it’s Virtual Reality (VR) that’s getting all the love. Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Facebook are all getting in on the action with the development of virtual reality hardware – Cardboard, Hololens, Gear VR and Oculus Rift, respectively.
The future of VR is unarguably in the hands of these industry-leading companies in terms of creating immersive content and developing hardware, but it doesn’t mean smaller entities aren’t welcomed into the world of VR, especially when it comes to making it more accessible to the masses.
Here to do that is Figment VR, an affordable, portable VR viewer from Quantum Bakery that’s looking to make it to the big leagues with the help of Kickstarter.
Rather than relying on a bulky, battery-powered setup, the Figment VR viewer capitalizes on an altered version of a well-known photography quote – ‘The best VR device is the one that’s with you.’
With portability key, the Figment VR takes on the form factor of an iPhone case, featuring built-in optics that flip around from the back of the case to align with the screen.
By using VR-capable apps, such as VRSE, Google Cardboard or Jaunt VR, the Figment VR viewer turns your smartphone into the a portable VR device, without the need to carry around any extra heft.
The case comes in both black and white and features a soft, satin-like finish. It’s constructed of roughly 30 different pieces made of 6000 series aluminum or heavy-duty plastic.
Android versions are in development, but in the meantime, Figment VR is limited to iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus models for $49, $30 less than what it’s expected to retail for. In less than 24 hours Figment VR has reached $12,000 of its $75,000 funding goal, with 56 days left to go in the campaign.
If successfully funded by January 13th, 2015, the first boxes of Figment VR cases are set to ship in ‘Early 2016.’
