Canon is celebrating a major win this week after earning two of the highest honors at the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2025, one of the region’s most prestigious design showcases. The company received the Grand Award for its EOS R50 V, an APS-C mirrorless camera designed for video creators, and the Silver Award for its flagship full-frame EOS R1.
The recognition cements Canon’s leadership in combining innovation and thoughtful, user-centered design that you can feel every time you use one of its cameras.
These wins come from the Hong Kong Design Centre’s annual celebration of design excellence across Asia. The DFA Awards recognize projects that elevate everyday life through thoughtful user-centric design.
The EOS R50 V: Made for a Generation of Video Creators
The Canon EOS R50 V, winner of the Grand Award, is a compact APS-C mirrorless camera built with video creators and livestreamers in mind. It’s Canon’s answer to a growing demand for cameras that keep pace with the fast, flexible world of digital storytelling.
Canon approached the R50 V with an emphasis on versatility and comfort. The camera’s sculpted grip makes it easy to hold securely during extended shoots, while its lightweight frame allows for smooth movement during handheld vlogging or run-and-gun recording. The redesigned touch interface intelligently adjusts its layout and orientation based on how the camera is held, ensuring that you can operate it naturally from any angle. It’s a small innovation that adds up to a smoother creative experience.
A key design decision was the removal of the traditional viewfinder, which gives the R50 V a clean, streamlined silhouette. The flat top surface pairs neatly with accessories such as microphones and lights, creating a flexible setup that adapts easily to your workflow. Canon also positioned a tripod screw mount for vertical shooting, a simple but impactful detail that makes portrait-format content more accessible for social media creators.
The EOS R1: The Professional’s Powerhouse
While the R50 V brings innovation to creators on the move, the Canon EOS R1 represents the company’s highest standard for professionals. The R1 took home the Silver Award for its blend of engineering precision and design excellence. It is the first flagship full-frame mirrorless camera in the EOS R System, marking a milestone for Canon and its professional users.
At the heart of the R1 lies a new image processing system that works in harmony with deep learning technology. This combination delivers advanced subject recognition and tracking performance that professionals can depend on for fast-paced photography. From sports arenas to wildlife expeditions, the R1 is built to respond instantly and accurately to your every move.
Ergonomics play a major role in its appeal. The camera’s cross-pattern rubber grip provides a solid hold and helps prevent accidental slips during orientation changes. Canon refined the familiar EOS silhouette, improving balance and comfort while retaining its recognizable professional form. Each control and button has been positioned with care, ensuring that every motion feels natural, even under pressure.
The R1’s design has been recognized far beyond the DFA Awards. It also earned the Good Design Best 100 in Japan, the Red Dot Best of the Best in Switzerland, and the iF Design Award 2025 in Germany. These accolades confirm what photographers already know: Canon’s design philosophy continues to evolve, focusing on the connection between human capability and technological excellence.
Canon said that it will “continue striving to create products that expertly blend excellent design with outstanding performance.”
