#CameraPorn: How a $50,000 Leica is made

Leica cameras are a funny beast in the world of photography. It’s hard to keep respect for a brand that seems to be more keen to create Panda-editions of their cameras for the Chinese market, and $600 cigarette lighters. Having said that, it’s hard to deny that Leica – and especially the special edition cameras – are known for impeccable craftsmanship. In what can only be described as camera porn, check out this video…
You may not be all that keen to shell out $50,000 for what is essentially a $6,000 camera with some accessories thrown in, but if you think that’s a problem, this is simply not the camera for you. More a fashion accessory than a piece of photographic equipment, the Leica M9-P Hermes Edition is something else entirely.
And yes, even though it’s all-too-easy to poke fun at Leica for running their photography cred into the ground, but there is something absolutely mesmerising about seeing the incredible amount of painstaking craftsmanship that goes into making one of the hyper-exclusive cameras. Hit full screen, sit back, and marvel at this…

A good case of someone with more money than sense. Insane
Great, but fuck this, rich mans game, glad great cameras get cheaper and cheaper, price wise, so more young kids from all walks of life can snap away!
Shalikram Koirala 50000 dollar ko
Contacting my banker in the Cayman Islands right now ?
That was really cool to watch!! It’s a beautiful piece of equipment, but I think I’ll take my 50 grand and do many, many other things with it. *Many* other things!
As if a $6000 camera wasn’t enough…
Lifestyles of the rich and shameless.
I don’t know anyone with a $50,000 camera. It doesn’t make you a better photographer.
The video is of a camera bag not a Leica??
These expensive editions are making “cheaper” leica cameras possible… I know that a 8000$ camera is not cheap but for a handcrafted german camera…it is still ok
“It starts with a furnace full of 50 dollar bills,” our tour guide Lars explains. “Only the freshest 50s are used; only the finest for our lenses.”
