The American Society of Media Photographers has announced a groundbreaking initiative: starting in 2026, students enrolled in 2-year or 4-year visual arts programs anywhere in the world can join ASMP for free.
This move removes one of the biggest barriers for emerging photographers and visual creators, giving students access to the organization’s education, resources, and community without financial burden.
For photographers entering the industry, this represents a significant opportunity to learn, network, and grow professionally.
A Historic Step for Emerging Creators
Kevin Brusie, chair of the ASMP National Board, describes the program as one of the most impactful initiatives in the organization’s 80-year history.
By eliminating membership fees for students, ASMP aims to ensure that young photographers can benefit from the same world-class resources that professional members enjoy.
Brusie emphasizes that providing access to education, community, and industry guidance at this stage is a “game-changer” for those beginning their careers.

Melanie Porter, ASMP’s Chief Operating Officer, highlights the forward-thinking nature of the initiative. She points out that ASMP has always embraced innovation and risk-taking in support of the photography community.
This program is designed to give students a stable platform as they navigate an increasingly complex landscape of image-making, preparing them for both creative and business challenges in the profession.
How Students Can Participate
The program launches in January 2026. Students who want to take advantage of free membership will need to verify their enrollment in a qualifying visual arts program.
There is no cap on participation, meaning students from any country can join. Those who became members in the final quarter of 2025 will have their dues refunded automatically, ensuring that cost does not impede access to the organization’s benefits.
For students, this offers a rare chance to explore professional-grade tools, educational resources, and networking opportunities without worrying about membership fees. ASMP provides a wide range of resources, including legal and policy guidance, business publications, and access to industry standards that would otherwise require paid membership.

Industry Support and Collaboration
ASMP Chief Executive Officer Thomas Maddrey notes that the program has received strong support from major industry players, including camera manufacturers, companies, and retailers. Many are eager to participate and support ASMP’s efforts, recognizing the value of nurturing the next generation of photographers.
This collaboration between a professional association and industry partners strengthens the network of resources available to students, giving them a broader perspective on professional practices and market expectations.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate students into the professional photography community early. Coupled with ASMP’s recently announced Education Partner Program, the organization is reshaping the way it engages with both students and institutions, providing structured access to education, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Benefits Beyond Membership
Joining ASMP as a student member offers more than just educational resources. Members gain access to an active community of over 7,200 photographers across 38 chapters and 71 countries, providing a global network of peers and mentors.
They can attend events, workshops, and webinars designed to develop both creative skills and business acumen. Access to legal guidance, advocacy programs, and industry publications ensures students understand both the artistic and professional aspects of a career in photography.
ASMP’s free student membership is a strategic move to support photographers at the earliest stage of their careers. By removing financial barriers, the organization ensures that emerging visual creators have access to the knowledge, guidance, and connections needed to thrive.
Early access to professional organizations, after all, can make a significant difference in the competitive world of photography.
