It’s official – Bowens is dead after 94 years

As we reported a few days ago, it seems that Bowens has gone into liquidation. And now they’ve confirmed – after 94 years in the business, Bowens is officially out. They didn’t seem to be able to withstand the competition and the changes in the market.

In 2016, Calumet and Bowens were acquired by Aurelius. As Calumet Photographic tells PetaPixel, Bowens is officially closing its doors. The reason behind the decision is Just as our writer John assumed – they couldn’t keep up with the brands like Godox. This company, along with the brands such as Phottix and Yongnuo produce significantly cheaper gear with the same features. So, it’s not viable anymore for Bowens to stay in the business.

The company states some more reasons for the shutdown. One of them is that they are affected by “product innovations by competitors,” and they also believe the buying behavior of professional photographers have changed.

Bowens Camera Service Company was established in 1928 in London, as a camera repair company. They began to produce their first flash bulbs in 1947. Three years later, they made their own electronic studio flash systems. From 1963, the name Bowens International Ltd. was officially registered. And as it turns out – now it’s time for some new names on the scene.
