SmallRig Wants to Turn Your iPhone 18 Pro Into a Cinema Camera

Turning an iPhone into a more capable filmmaking setup usually means adding a cage, handles, filters, microphones, lights, and other accessories. SmallRig’s new Creator and Cinema kits for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max bring many of those pieces into a modular system designed around its SR-MicroSlide accessory rail.

The company is introducing two configurations: the Creator Kit for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and the Cinema Kit for iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Both use a dual handle design and an aluminum cage, while the Cinema Kit adds more mounting and lens accessory options for users building a larger mobile filmmaking rig.

A cage built around flexible accessory placement

At the center of both kits is an iPhone cage with SmallRig’s SR-MicroSlide rail system running around the frame. The system allows compatible handles and accessories to be repositioned around the cage rather than locking users into a single configuration.

Accessories can include microphones, lights, monitors, tripods, and other equipment. The cage also has multiple 1/4″-20 anti-twist threaded holes, along with support for SmallRig’s existing quick release interfaces and HawkLock ecosystem.

For filmmakers who regularly change how they hold or mount their phone, the positioning system is one of the more notable parts of the kits. Handles can be moved along the SR-MicroSlide rail and secured in place, allowing the same cage to be configured for handheld shooting, tripod work, or other setups.

The cage also leaves the iPhone’s buttons, ports, ultra-wide camera, and wireless charging area accessible. Its open-back design exposes the MagSafe attachment area and is intended to help with heat dissipation during recording.

SmallRig says the cage uses an aluminum alloy construction designed to provide protection against impacts and scratches. Strap holes at all four corners can also accommodate wrist and shoulder straps with cords measuring less than 2mm in diameter.

Creator Kit adds wireless camera controls

The Creator Kit is aimed at users who want a more flexible handheld setup without building a particularly large rig.

Its dual-handle arrangement provides two points of contact for handheld shooting, livestreaming, and other forms of mobile video production. Both handles can rotate continuously to different angles, allowing them to be positioned for different shooting styles. They can also be configured as top handles.

The kit version includes a Rotating Smart Control Handle with Wireless Control. Its detachable remote can control several camera functions, including zoom, exposure compensation, and switching between the front and rear cameras.

SmallRig lists a maximum wireless control range of 10 meters, or 32.8 feet. The remote can also be removed from the handle for standalone use.

The Creator Kit includes a 67mm attachable filter backplate. SmallRig lists T-Mount and 17mm lens backplates as optional accessories for this configuration, giving users additional options for adding filters or lenses to the phone.

It also weighs approximately 419.3 grams, according to SmallRig, and measures 177.4 x 93.6 x 16.2mm.

Cinema Kit expands the rig

The Cinema Kit takes the same basic cage concept and adds more hardware for users who need a broader production setup.

The package includes two wooden handles, one of which uses a rotating design. The handles can be repositioned through the SR-MicroSlide system and rotated to different angles. The rotating handle can also be used as either a side or top handle.

A NATO rail adapter expands the mounting options beyond the SR-MicroSlide system. The kit also includes an SR-MicroSlide plate adapter for Arca-Swiss, allowing the cage to connect with compatible tripod equipment.

Optical accessories are more extensive than those included with the Creator Kit. The Cinema Kit comes with 67mm, T-Mount, and 17mm lens backplates, giving users several ways to configure the phone for different shooting setups.

The package also includes two cold shoe adapters, a 180mm NATO rail for SR-MicroSlide, and the necessary Allen wrench.

At 586.5 grams, the Cinema Kit is considerably heavier than the Creator Kit. 

Two approaches to iPhone filmmaking

The two kits are aimed at slightly different setups despite sharing the same cage platform.

The Creator Kit focuses more on handheld control and quick adjustments. Its wireless remote gives users access to several shooting controls without having to reach for the phone itself, while the two handles provide additional stability.

The Cinema Kit is more focused on expansion. Its additional backplates, NATO rail, Arca-Swiss adapter, and wooden handles give users more options for integrating the iPhone into a larger filmmaking setup.

Both systems also retain the ability to reposition accessories, so the configuration does not have to remain fixed throughout a shoot.

Built for setups that keep changing

A mobile filmmaking setup rarely stays the same from one shot to the next. A handheld interview may call for a different grip from a static tripod shot, while a short film may need room for lights, audio equipment, and an external monitor.

That is where SmallRig’s SR-MicroSlide system becomes particularly relevant. Instead of treating the cage as a fixed arrangement, the system lets creators change the position of compatible handles and accessories as their shooting needs evolve.

For iPhone filmmakers who prefer building their setup piece by piece, the new kits offer another route to a more configurable mobile rig without committing to a single layout. The real test will be how well that flexibility translates from the workbench to an actual shoot.
