Owning a Dobsonian telescope gives you unmatched views of the cosmos. But moving a bulky Dob ever-presently tests your back and patience. Astro TUFF Truk offers a solution. They create handcrafted telescope trolleys. These trolleys come in two versions: the Dob Truk Small and the Dob Truk Large.
From workshop to stargazing
The company, Astro TUFF TRUK Ltd, operates from East Yorkshire, England. Each Truk is hand‑made and built to order. That means they tailor the build to your telescope setup. They don’t stock generic models. Instead, every build receives personal attention. The build quality stands out. The body uses a fully welded 3 mm‑walled mild‑steel box section. The section measures 60 × 40 mm. All fixings are stainless steel. Wheels are 10‑inch pneumatic tyres. Each Truk includes a detachable handlebar. The finish uses a C71 alkyd synthetic, anti‑corrosive enamel. Standard colors are matte white or black.
Dob Truk Small for mid-size Dobs
If you own a Dobsonian in the 8-inch to 12-inch range, the Dob Truk Small is designed for you. This model is compact, tough, and fully capable of handling the weight and shape of mid-sized Dobs. The trolley uses a clever 20 mm slot system to secure your telescope. Instead of balancing your rocker box or risking slips, the Truk comes with three custom feet. These replace the standard feet on your Dob base and fit directly into the slots, holding everything firmly in place.
Built from the same industrial-grade 3 mm mild steel used in all Astro TUFF TRUK products, the Small model stands strong against wear and tear. Stainless steel fixings ensure long-term durability, even in damp or dusty conditions. The 10-inch pneumatic tyres handle a variety of terrain, grass, gravel, or concrete, with ease. Whether you store your Dob indoors or in a shed, you can roll it to your observing site in a single smooth trip.
The Dob Truk Small measures approximately 122 centimeters long, 72 centimeters wide, and 38 centimeters high. It weighs about 22 kilograms. That gives it a sturdy footprint without being too heavy to lift into a vehicle if needed. Its load capacity is a staggering 500 kilograms on smooth ground, even though most scopes won’t come close to that weight. It can be customized with a wide range of extras. These include drop-and-lock legs or a speed-socket system for instant leveling, bumper bars to avoid dings, LED under-lighting, and even your choice of paint color.
Dob Truk Large: Built for big Dobsonians
For owners of large Dobsonians, typically in the 14-inch to 18-inch class, the Dob Truk Large offers unmatched support and mobility. This model is built for serious gear. Its platform is wider, longer, and stronger, providing a stable foundation for hefty telescope bases. It accommodates different rocker box designs with precision. By default, it uses a slot system similar to the smaller model. But for oversized or round bases, you can request deeper cups that cradle the bottom of your telescope securely.
Like its smaller sibling, the Large Truk is hand-built from 3 mm welded mild-steel box sections, with stainless fixings and 10-inch pneumatic tyres. These features give it a high strength-to-weight ratio and smooth handling. You can move even an 18-inch Dob across a backyard or observatory floor with minimal effort. Once in place, the Truk can be leveled with optional drop-and-lock legs or held steady using bumper bars. The whole system is designed to reduce vibration, prevent wobble, and ensure perfect balance.
The Dob Truk Large measures about 140 centimeters in length, 88 centimeters in width, and 38 centimeters in height. It weighs roughly 28 kilograms and offers the same incredible 500 kilogram movable load capacity. Just like the Small model, it can be customized with lights, colors, structural add-ons, and specialized locking systems depending on your needs.
Benefits of the Truks
Dobsonians give splendid views. But their rocker-box base can be heavy and awkward to lift. Rolling them solves that, but only if the platform is sturdy. These Truks offer that.
- Ease of movement: The trolley rolls your scope easily. The 10‑inch pneumatic tyres handle bumps and uneven ground.
- Rock‑solid stability: When parked, drop‑down legs or cups give a secure stance. No wobble, no sway, especially vital for astrophotography or precise tracking.
- Swift setup and teardown: Instead of multiple trips from storage to set up, you simply wheel your Dob into place.
- Safety for your gear and body: No strain from heavy lifting. Just roll smoothly to, say, a patio or garden. It protects your back and your telescope.
- Custom fit: They build each Truk to match your Dob’s base. That snug fit significantly lowers wobble and sliding.

One response to “Rolling Your Dobsonian with Ease: Dob Truks to the Rescue”
As a dedicated Dobsonian owner who regularly observes deep-sky objects with my 10-inch reflector, I commend this Truk design for tackling the perennial issue of maneuverability in amateur astronomy.
The welded steel frame ensures minimal vibration, critical for tracking faint nebulae or galaxies under urban skies, aligning with principles like precise altazimuth mounts. This could democratize access to extended sessions, potentially boosting citizen science contributions—imagine easier fieldwork for projects like the Zooniverse. A sturdy, insightful upgrade for us stargazers!
