Nikon D5 Rumored To Have 173 Autofocus Points And Be Released With The 24-70mm VR

Canonists have plenty to be excited about with the upcoming release of the EOS 5Ds models and the 11-24mm lens.
As of a few hours ago, and maybe not by chance, Nikonists also have something to look forward to.
Not a minute too soon, the first Nikon D5 rumor is here.
There’s not a whole lot of info right now, but Nikon Rumors states that the next Nikon DSLR flagship could come with a jaw dropping 173 autofocus points! The D4s, which already has an outstanding focus system, has “only” 51 AF points.
While the body design and the processor aren’t expected to change, the sensor will get a 25% upgrade from 16MP to 20MP.
The rumor states that the D5 is scheduled to be announced in the second half of 2015, which could make sense towards an early 2016 release.
The D4s was released in March 2014, so this would be on track for a two year cycle.
A new 24-70mm f/2.8 VR is rumored to be released along with the D5, so it could be a double celebration for Nikon shooters.
The Current 24-70mm is an awesome lens, but many people would like to see the 2007 lens replaced with a VR model.

173 focus points?? That would rock! As long as it covers the full area of the sensor frame, unlike my D610 :'(
This is disappointing. I expected at least 223
4k hologram video or no sale!
5D… D5… 5D5… D5D?
salt from 51-173 focus points ??
here i am using one focus point…
Who cares?
Canon will has 50MP – Nikon only 20 … as usual – and then very surpriuzed low sales)))) At leasrt 173 focus points – really cool!
D5, likely to me the ultimate sport/event camera. For that, 20mp is more than plenty.
“Only 20?” Who would want a 50MP sports Camera?
Honestly, as a wedding and fashion photographer, I’ve never needed more than the center focus point. It’s the sharpest and easy to focus and reframe.
you will feel it if you are a Sport shooter or Action/Wildlife. I try to get rid of my 6D because of it simple AF system. Nikon D(x) is professional sport line of Nikon so….:)
I definitely agree with that. I don’t shoot any action though so I actually found myself getting the 6D for its low light capabilities(weddings are dim). It has a large sensor comparable if not better than most canon DSLRs.
You gonna love the ISO range of the 6D. sometimes I use the f1.4 lens, i dont even need a flash for indoor at night, all natural light. 6D is a great camera, idk why the price drop so low now so I can’t sell it.
This is a big year for photography. I have a feeling, mirrors are going to be outrun by electronic sensors so Canon is trying to change its path. It’s been running the same concept for years when Sony and Olympus have stepped up their game. Only thing they don’t have comparable to Canon and Nikon is the lens selection.
Hm.. as far as I see. It can’t be outrun by the electronic sensor. I’ve found most of expensive Nikon camera comes mirror.
Right but the thing is that both Nikon and Canon have not stepped up their technology while other companies have. Electronic sensors are faster, smaller, and actually include a lot more features that DSLRs cannot compete with like face recognition(with memory), wifi, gps, and not to mention their sensors are huge.
Aren’t they all electronic sensor? And the only sensor that hasn’t been improving is canon’s? Dslrs have face recognition too. D800, d4s.
since when is a huge sensor a problem?
Ever get focus shift with large aperature though?
173 focus points is good for precomposition in actionphoto I think :-)
The resolution of the 24-70 definitely is too low for the D800 so an update would be highly appreciated! Ever took a closer look to the corners on the wide side?
Well. I use all of the focusing points. Wedding candids don’t wait for you to reframe. And since I use only prime lenses and mostly f/2.0 and 1.4, I need to use the one that is most suitable. Also, is very well known that when you reframe, the focusing plane slightly shifts, making the focus a little less than precise. With that being said, I couldn’t care less for a 24-70..with VR or not. And unless those focusing point are going to use a wider part of the frame, I don’t care eighter.
Actually, at least for me, reframing is way faster than changing the focus point..
Manual focus is even faster and more precise.
Candids don’t wait for you to reframe but they do wait for you to shift focus points? I don’t understand that.
Who cares about having a 50mp camera with lenses that can’t support that. Low sales, but smart people who don’t throw away their money on crap. I, for one, use a Phase One IQ180 and phase one lenses. That Canon camera can’t hold a candle to MF cameras.
Because the more AF points you have the better photographer you are. I have lost potential clients because I didn’t have enough focus points. HA!
Fact is that if you never need more than the single focus point then this camera is not for you, so why even bother commenting? those of us who make a living shooting wildlife and sport, is some of the most challenging conditions need these focus systems, I also have never lost a client but have missed a number of fantastic images due to a slow focus system. So in our case, better focus systems makes us better photographers by getting us a tool that can do more in even more challenging conditions.

Less than two years after the D4s? Highly unlikely. If a D5 comes out, then the D4 prices will drop even more… to the point where a lot of low light photographers can buy a used/refurbed D4 for the price of a new 5DM4 or 5Ds. And as for the high AF points, how would you fit 173?
