John Aldred
John Aldred is a photographer with over 25 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter – and occasional beta tester – of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Every so often, something comes along in the name of parody that really hits home. In my time working with a camera, I’ve come across every single one of these at some point or other. This wonderful series of illustrations were created by Mike Roshuk at pixelcrush_ca and while they do play on stereotypes, we’ve almost certainly all met them at some point.
We’ve featured Mike’s work here on DIYP before, and it’s really excellent. Hopefully, you’re not one of the photographers featured in his latest series. Or, at least strive to not be one of these. But on the off chance that you haven’t met any of these people in your photographic journey, watch out, one of them might just be you.

While most are just a bit of harmless fun, that last one is definitely a type of camera owner you should not aspire to become (as is the GWC).
To keep things fair, Mike has also created a series of Typical models that every photographer knows which is just as funny and rings just as true. I’ve met all of these at some point, and I’ve met some models that were several of these combined. They were all a lot of fun to work with, though, except “The Flake”, for obvious reasons.

I rather feel ‘personally attacked’ because there is no female photographer at all. ? WHERE ARE WE? I want to smile on female stereotypes too. ?
Let’s list the stereotypes of female photographers, I know an awesome artist that can draw us :D

Now we just ned the typical female photographer ;)
Although these cartoons are funny, not having the female version shows just how much photography is a male-predominant industry. :)
On a side note, I remember when I googled “photographer” and “model” for an article I wrote. “Photographer” would give results with mostly men, and “model” with mostly women.
Are you sure it is still a male-predominant industry? Without really doing any statistics, I feel like when it comes to portraitphotographers it is a lot more women – epsecially if we are talking under 50 (and if we are talking under 30, it is nearly only women).
First, he said “he thinks.” Second, he said “society still sees it.” This means that it is not his opinion that photography is a male-dominated profession. He just thinks that this is how society sees it. Personally, I don’t care who dominates the industry, as long as prices of gear goes down. Unfortunately…
Hm, to put it differently, I think that society still SEES it as male-predominant. But I think that the number of women in the industry is actually pretty high!
I’m not relying on statistics either, just my personal feeling :)
See here is an articel we need! Because I think if you ask parents with young babies about who they “see” as a photographer, I think they “see women” – on the other hand, if you ask about filming, models, fashion, I think people “see” men. For weddings, I think it is close to 50/50 …
And we all know, if you ask Nikon, they see men, no matter what ;)
So, Udi Tirosh – free topic right here for an articel – is the industry still male dominant – and is it still seen that way? :D
No it’s not. From the mothers (family photos, daycare photos, school photography), to spouses and wives (couples session, engagement session, weddings, anniversaries) most of our clients are women, not men. The men just comply. And hand down, they prefer women photographers.
I don’t get it.

Quite realistic if you ask me.

It’s not, no, but it’s nice to balance out the sexism.
Balancing out the sexism would be addressing that female photographers and make models exist, which this satirical series evidently isn’t aware of.

Missing the many types of wildlife shooters, nature, birders, pair team ups, waterfowl specialist, and so on. ??

These are so blank slated and stereotypical that I’m finding it hard TO be personally attacked.
Aside from the Expert, literally every other one is just “This is a caricature….its a caricature.”
THIS is how you satirize photographers!!
Being a PHOTOGRAPHY blog, it seems like it would be funnier (and more challenging) with actual PHOTOS of these people, instead of comic book drawings.
Come on guys, it’s a joke. The ‘Every Model’ ones are hilarious as well. Take a laugh, and get over your egos.
Everyone seems to be taking this way too seriously. It is a bit of fun, have a giggle and move on. It does not need a serious critique or suggestions for improvement.
Missing me, the adict. Carey’s a camera everywhere, is sick of the complaint about specs, owns far too many cameras, still shoots film on occasion, and has an “I hit the lottery cart” on B&H with gear set for every occasion because, why not.
