Canon EOS RP first impressions leave filmmakers disappointed

With the new Canon EOS RP, Canon has added the second RF mount camera to its lineup. It’s the lightest and least expensive Canon full frame camera ever, and it has some promising specs. However, judging from the first impressions videos, filmmakers and other video content creators aren’t exactly pleased with the latest Canon mirrorless.
While this lightweight mirrorless with a flip screen could be useful for vloggers, Matti Haapoja has spotted some serious setbacks for shooting other kinds of video with it. Although the Canon EOS RP shoots 4K, there’s no Dual Pixel AF in 4K. On the other hand, when shooting in 1080p, you can only shoot 30fps or 60fps, there’s no 24fps. So, he notes that this camera won’t be useful even for beginner filmmakers.
Caleb Pike of DSLR Video Shooter is equally disappointed. He points to the same drawbacks as Matti, adding that there’s no 120fps at 720p. He also adds that using a crop EF-S lens on this camera you are only left with “terrible 4K” or 720p.
After the initial excitement, Max Yuryev changed his opinion after discovering the same drawbacks and quirks.
Potato Jet sticks with the same opinion as the previously mentioned video makers.
Lee Zavitz of Zed Pro Media had his heart broken by Canon on Valentine’s Day, as he puts it. Yeah, you guessed it, another disappointed filmmaker.
According to Camera Conspiracies, the “P” in the Canon’s “RP” stands for “please for the love of God Canon, stop doing this to us, just give us a good camera already.” He’s not a fan of the EOS R either, and he thinks that the “budget version” is even worse.
Although the Canon EOS RP has left filmmakers disappointed, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a bad camera. Apparently, it’s not aimed at professional filmmakers (probably not even professional photographers). At the price of $1,299, it’s a pretty good deal for an entry-level full-frame mirrorless, and it can be a good travel camera. So, at least some photographers could find it useful, even if probably won’t be the first choice for filmmakers.

First of all, if you change to PAL you’ll get 25/50 fps. Second of all, Canon doesn’t even target filmmakers with this camera.
24p is a movie standard and 25p is boardcast standard. Different in frame rate can lead to audio sync, drop frame, interlacing issues…etc Especially shooting multi camera, editing different clips with different frame rate on a time line became an issue.
Yes, but the difference between 24 and 25 ain’t as big as between 24 and 30.
Don’t care about video.
Well, a lot of people do.
Yep, but not people who would buy *this* camera.
These kind of “outrage review” type videos (with bonus sad smiley or face palm thumbnails) that are all over Youtube are SO tedious…
Negative opinions attract more attention than positive. Those youtubers people too, they gotta make money. :) If someone posted only positive things about RP they would be called Canon shill or sponsored by canon.
Just buy a film camera. My God!
This camera totally remind me of the film Rebel G. It even used a digital rebel battery.
Because every cameras HAS to be a video camera.
Breaking news.
Canon releases non-c line camera leaves videographers underwhelmed. ?
Canon fanboys be like, filmmakers, who need them in 21st century. ↕
If you’re a filmmaker and opt for the, by far, cheapest smallest fullframe mirrorless on the market you’re probably still using Velcro on your shoes…
Damn, it’s their most basic model. An entry model to full frame mirrorless… So no, it won’t be fully featured.
The new Toyota Corolla leaves Formula 1 drivers disappointed! :)
Again just watch the videos. These guys are NOT looking F1 features. You realize smartphones can shoot 24fps? You realize the camera CAN shoot video but only at 30fps or 60fps in 1080 which is HARDER then 24fps???!! This is the only thing people are pissed about and rightfully so. That is 100% intentionally crippling the camera for no reason. We are not talking about ANY pro features which TBH in 2019 they should be offering.
Realize Sony A7iii is considered their ENTRY level FF camera and it does LAPs around this thing. It’s just canon arrogance. You should demand more from a better company.
You know what ? With a smart phone you can make phone calls too.
Well maybe because this camera was not made for film makers??….eh?
Probably some serious filmmakers?? lol

If you are a film maker buy a film maker camera what do you expect from a $1299 camera? Its a camera for photos seems great for travel and portraits maybe great as a second body. Video people get so triggered by photo cameras that cant do the video they want…..
Exactly, this is what I was thinking. There are too many desktop photographers and videographers in these times that instead of create and produce just spend time looking if a camera has this or that…
Basically they want an Mini Alexa for the price of RP.
im sorry but it’s 2019 and for a camera at the price point of above even $500 to not offer 1080p at 24fps which is easier to do then 30p or 60p which the camera offers shows the complete and total arrogance of canon. iPhones from five years ago can do this. Cmon. We should all want better. That is what these guys are mad about not that it’s not a RED. They are fine with ALL the other missing features but to purposefully cripple your camera is total BS from any company. 24fps is NOT something we should be discussing in 2019. It’s just not. Photo camera be damned. And if it was just for photos why does it shoot 4k at 24fps albeit without dual pixel. Again cripple.
What a cry babies. Buying a 1984 Corolla and thinking it performs like an F1.
Without realising it’s actually a Corolla, intended for all purpose stuff that’s not extreme.
And crop lenses leaves you with720p BECAUSE YOU CROPPED THE IMAGE! Duh! Someone is beingbhommer Simpson here.
If Canon name this camera EOS Rebel R, then no one will complain about its crippled video function. You’ll be expecting it to have less features.
Is anybody else tired of new cameras coming out and the reviewers hate it.
It’s hard to find good honest unbiased reviews anymore.
I’m sure it’s an excellent camera for the photographer who needs it.
Sensational titles and fake outrage equals views… For some reason I can’t comprehend. Is the average person really that stupid?
…more like EOS RIP, am I right?
That jokes gettin pretty old… And it will sell like crazy
Damn! Didn’t realize I was late to the party ?
Now that’s a real basic model! Sony you need to learn with that! ???
Or maybe the “P” stands for “Photography”. As someone who couldn’t give half a rats ass about video stats, this camera is exactly what I want. If you shoot video, buy a video camera. These sensational videos and articles decrying the video specs of these cameras are really getting old.
Im gonna test a filmkamera like a red and then complain about the lack pf photo options
Tom Medlock damn so my smartass comment failed ?
Jajaja!!! Good one!
Typical comment with Canon new released, then wait 2 weeks and reviews will start saying otherwise.
Screw the film makers.
This is a FF Rebel. Not a video camera.
Canon makes incredible video cameras and all you total losers who couldn’t make a decent video even if your life depended on it wouldn’t know how.
Canon makes superior products and these losers are jealous that Sony has garbage in comparison. Crappy color, crappy user interface, bad banding in their photos and video. And poor ergonomics.
Well technically it’s not even a full frame REBEL considering that even the crop sensor REBEL can shoot 24fps in 1080p. Which is exactly what these guys are saying. And even canon wants people to shoot video with it since they put 4K 24fps in it. So why not 1080? Which is easier and less taxing on the camera. Everyone here claiming these guys want pro features aren’t even realizing they DONT want 4K. They want something pretty basic that EVERY canon has had since like 2011. But canon wants you to spend $2500 on the body alone to get that in a FF mirrorless camera.
Can’t agree with you more friend!??
Lack of weatherproofing is a deal breaker for me. What would you folks recommend as an alternative? Looking at Nikon Z6 and various Sony’s. I was counting on Sony to release an a6700 or a7000, but alas…
None of the Rebel-class bodies are weather sealed.
Am I the only one who realizes that Canon doesn’t care about filmmakers with it’s cameras anymore? Seriously, if you want to use a mirrorless for video go with Panasonic, Fuji, or Sony.
If you want to make film buy a film camera not a still camera.
Wow. So many canon apologists here and so many people who obviously didn’t watch ANY of these videos or ever watch any of these guys. Which is sad because they almost ALL give really good unbiased reviews. Give them a chance before you bury your head in the sand and say video doesn’t matter or that they expect a corolla to be a Ferrari. They don’t…. They expect a corolla not to only be able to drive 55mmph. Because that is what most highways are. In the US anyway…
Filmmakers or YouTube’rs :))
People are fine that it’s a “Corolla” not an F1. this is obvious. but really, these people are wanting a corolla that has a fracking AM radio, not even a CD player, just a basic RADIO!!!. seriously. not even a corolla compared to F1. this camera just sucks. kicking the legs out of 120p on the EOS R was the start of being a choice of arrogant market position. that’s what they’re complaining about. some of these people are really angry about other brands and stick up for Canon. I’m just mad at the business model not the product. The issues start from the top down.
These guys are idiots or just doesnt have any marketnig sense? Canon isnt an idiot :D this features like 720p 120fps and dualpixel at 4k are only for the more expensive bodies , this is a cheap body firstly for photography ;)
Canon never like to push videographers on the R or the EF line even 1D XII is a crap at this level because it doesnt have clog and yay mine 5d4 have clog recording capabilities unlocked for extra money. But for 1300$ what do you expected? :D Canon Cinema line with C100 start at price tag….. :D
I’ve zero interest in moving to mirrorless from dslr until canon get the finger out of their ass and LISTEN to what people want, WATCH what competitors are doing right AND wrong and then improve upon both.
All I know is that.., I love mine!
It’s just what I’m looking for in a “Photography Camera” simple as that!!!
