Users are reporting issues with SanDisk memory cards in the Sony A7III

Recently, a user on Sony Alpha subreddit reported an issue with his a7 III when a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card is inserted. They were looking for an advice from fellow Sony users, but as it turned out – many more of them have had the same issue with the same memory card type.
The user shadyashell described the problem like this:
“I recently bought a Sony A7III and a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card (Class 3) memory card, and everytime I insert the card into slot 1 the error message “Unable to read memory card. Reinsert memory card. Slot 1” appears. I’ve reset the camera multiple times, formatted the card both on slot 2 and my laptop.”
They asked for an advice on solving the issue, but more users replied that they have the same problem when inserting this specific memory card into their Sony a7 III. When the new firmware was released, the users believed that would solve the problem. However, a few of them reported that the issue persisted.
Redditor dany74m claims that they contacted Sony and that “they officially recognized the problem:”
“I Called Sony again, they officially recognized the problem, the camera or the card are not defective is just an incompatibility with the SD extreme V.30 128gb, they said they are aware and they are working to fix the issue with a firmware update in few weeks.”
According to other users, it’s not Sony to blame, but SanDisk. Apparently, most of the users who experienced the issue ordered their card through Amazon around late September/early October. User frankos72 writes that it looks like it was a “bad batch.”
Sony has confirmed to DPReview that they’re “investigating the claims,” so it’s still not clear what caused this issue and how it will be resolved. We will continue to follow the case and update the article with the news.
Have you experienced the same problem?

I found this page researching the issue with my A7iii. I am using a 64GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-1 Card. Same error message mentioned in the article. I returned the first card and picked up a second card – same error. Both purchased at Best Buy so maybe not an Amazon batch issue.
My A7 III, same card type, same error. Batch 064G purchased at Amazon three days ago. I have two cards and both generate the error in slot 1 but work fine in slot 2.
At BorrowLenses, they pointed out that inside the cover for the card slot it specifies you must use a Class II card, not class I. When I got a class II card, Sandisk worked fine.
I have a bunch of sandisk uhs1 cards purchased earlier in this year that have no problem being in slot 1. It does not specify anything . It just shows you that slot 2 can’t write at the same speeds as slot 1. It is a bad batch of cards from sandisk. Just purchased 8 cards from bestbuy today 12/5/18and none of them work on slot one. My July card of the exact same type works fine on slot 1
It worked with SLOT 2 but not SLOT 1 weird
Yes, but also with the 64 gb. I bought 3 of them and neither works… Works fine in other cameras.
You need to update your camera’s firmware. :)
