holo digital translucent camera

Remember when all the tech was translucent? The Holo digital camera might be new, but it looks like it could have been plucked right out of the late ’90s or early 2000s. Manual, the NYC-based photo brand, has tapped into pure Y2K nostalgia with a see‑through body, lo‑fi image quality, and all the vibes of a translucent Game Boy Color crossed with a webcam from 2002. SO brace yourselves my fellow millennials, you’re going to love this.

I vividly remember when translucent tech was all the rage. I especially remember the landline phones: those were iconic! I never had a translucent camera, but hey, here’s my chance!

The Holo Digital Camera Specs

Here’s the Holo digital camera hides under the hood. Well, actually, maybe it doesn’t hide it as it’s see-through:

SpecDetail
Sensor7 MP CMOS (native)
Effective / Interpolated OutputUp to 50 MP interpolated
Image StyleNostalgic, lo‑fi texture with soft digital grain
VideoFull HD 1080p (AVI format)
Zoom16× digital
Display2.8″ TFT color screen
StoragemicroSD (8 GB – 64 GB)
PortsUSB‑C + microSD slot
BatteryRechargeable lithium
Colors / FinishTranslucent green, pink, blue

There are a few caveats worth mentioning. The images are saved as JPEGs only, and the video tops out at 1080p. So, just like the design is retro, the specs kinda are too. The lens focal range isn’t specified and I couldn’t find this information on the manufacturer’s site.

Manual frames this translucent camera less as a precision tool and more as a conduit for playful, imperfect documentation. “We built HOLO as a tool for play, where imperfection becomes the art,” Manual’s founder and Creative Director, Malcolm Dia, told Hypebeast. “These cameras are made to be passed between friends, creating a shared archive of nights, weekends, and memories that actually feel real.”

Strengths and Weaknesses

As you can probably tell by now, Holo digital camera won’t outperform a mirrorless or even a competent smartphone in sharpness, dynamic range, autofocus, or high ISO clean images. The 16× zoom is digital only, not optical, which means image degradation at higher zoom levels. Video is limited to 1080p, and the JPEG‑only workflow limits post-processing flexibility. In other words, this is more about vibe than versatility.

On the plus side, the visual identity and nostalgia are strong with this one. It stands out purely on aesthetics, in a world of black rectangles. It’s also accessible: at $95, it lowers the barrier for people curious about a “digital camera that’s also a design piece.” Sure, it has limitations, but it leans into them. It’s compact, uses all the modern ports, and its expandable storage makes it usable in real life.

Why This Nostalgia Move Makes Sense

Nostalgia has been a design undercurrent in recent years – from fashion to reboots of analog gear, film cameras, and retro gaming. The Holo leans into that current. But unlike a simple retro clone, it fuses the look with modern conveniences: USB-C, digital storage, a color LCD, and a rechargeable battery. I think it caters to both us, nostalgic millennials, and the new kids who see retro tech and fashion as cool. The fact that they see early 2000s as “retro” is something I find shocking, but that’s a different topic. :)

So, whether you’re a nostalgic millennial or someone younger embracing the tech of yesteryear because it’s all the rage now, this is your moment. The Holo Digital Camera is priced at $95 USD and available via Manual’s official website. It comes in translucent pink, green, or blue.
