This smartphone tripod mount lets you use your Apple Watch as a selfie screen

Smartphone vlogging has gotten quite popular over the last couple of years, but it has one big flaw. Not with all phones, but most of them. And that’s that you can’t use your high-quality rear camera if you want to see your composition. You’re stuck using the selfie camera which isn’t always that great.

Well, now, thanks to the new Ulanzi ST-09, if you use an iPhone and have an Apple Watch, you can mount the two back-to-back so that you can use the better quality rear camera on your phone and see a live view preview at the same time.

Like most smartphone tripod mounts, there’s a 1/4-20″ threaded socket underneath. It expands up to let you slip in your phone and then clamps down on it with a spring-loaded mechanism. On the top there’s a cold shoe, allowing you to attach a microphone or a small LED light. But what makes this one unique is the Apple Watch mount on the back.

It’s designed specifically for the Apple Watch Series 5, so if you have an older one, then it won’t fit. The newer Apple Watch Series 6, however, has exactly the same form factor as the Series 5, so it should also fit just perfectly.

Of course, nobody’s suggesting you go out and buy an iPhone and an Apple Watch just for vlogging, but with the number of vloggers (or would-be-vloggers) out there that already own both of these devices, it makes sense to spend the $20 and pick one of these up. If you don’t own either, then you’re probably better off just getting a 4K mirrorless camera with a flippy out LCD and using that.

The Ulanzi ST-09 is available to buy now for a discounted introductory price of $19.95 (regular price is $29.95) from the Ulanzi website. I expect it’ll start popping up on Amazon and the usual places soon.
