The new Profoto Camera app adds ProfotoRAW, TTL and other enhanced features

Profoto has updated the Profoto Camera app with a completely new design that they say was rebuilt from the ground up. Designed to allow you to shoot photos on your smartphone using Profoto lights. Available for iOS and a limited number of Android devices, it offers a lot of new features over the previous basic manual camera app, including ProfotoRAW, a new AirX Smart-TTL algorithm, more accurate white and colour balance, faster response time and more.

The new app adds support for more of Profoto’s lighting products, including the Profoto A10, B10, B10 Plus, Pro-11, C1 and C1 Plus. And while it is primarily designed for use with iPhones, it’s also compatible with select Android devices, too.

The biggest feature in the new app is the addition of ProfotoRAW, which uses a standard DNG file format. It provides all of the benefits we’d typically expect from a DNG raw file, and the app also suggests possible edits from the raw, which Profoto says will help to save time for the photographer’s post-processing steps.

New auto colour and auto white balance algorithms measure the ambient and flash to achieve natural whites and colours and there’s a new smart automatic exposure algorithm that utilises a new AirX Smart-TTL algorithm to easily balance the flash with the ambient light. A new Classic Mode has also been added, which allows the user to precisely control both camera and individual flash settings.

When Profoto initially launched their AirX system, one of the big benefits is that it would allow high-speed sync shooting with a smartphone, and that feature is still available with the new app, allowing you to mix your Profoto strobes with the bright outdoors.

The power of professional Xenon flash combined with smartphone technology
The Profoto Camera app comes with better UX, more stability, speed, and better image processing capabilities than any other smartphone camera:

The key innovation making it possible is Profoto’s AirX technology, the world’s first solution to enable a seamless integration of professional flashes and smartphones.

Another new breakthrough achievement is also a unique auto exposure algorithm: Profoto AirX Smart-TTL. It enables anyone to create amazing images using flash without the need to understand all the cumbersome technicalities. This is possible using computational imaging and artificial intelligence.

Profoto RAW is a standard RAW lossless imaging format but optimized to deliver unmatched image quality and future flash photography workflow improvements. It holds 5–8 times more information than JPEG, leading to higher quality, significantly more details and greater editing possibilities.

User experience that redefines how the camera works
The Profoto Camera app comes with two different modes, each one optimized for different situations and needs:

Smart mode is setting the new benchmark for the flash photography industry
It enables photographers to control the visual style of the image taken with flash through intelligent color and contrast controls – with only a swipe of a finger.

Classic mode is a DSLR-like experience
Classic mode works just like a DSLR and lets you precisely control exposure and flash settings. Connect and use up to 4 flashes

The new Profoto Camera app is available to download completely free from the Apple App Store and Android Play Store – of course, you’ll need some Profoto lights to actually be able to make use of it. You can find out more about the app on the Profoto website.
