Sony manager confirms a new “enthusiast” APS-C camera is on the way

Sony Senior General Manager, Kenji Tanaka, has confirmed in an interview with Imaging Resource that they are focusing on APS-C and that a new high end “enthusiast” model APS-C camera is coming.

Many have felt that Sony has kind of neglected small form factor APS-C bodies in favour of full frame. But it has, apparently, always been their plan to focus on APS-C once their full frame lineup was where they felt it needed to be. And with the Sony A9, A7III and A7RIII (and hopefully, soon an A7SIII) it is now where they want it to be.

It’s been rumoured, hinted and hoped that IBIS would be coming to the Canon EOS R mirrorless lineup at some point, and now Canon Image Communication Business Operations Group Executive, Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, has confirmed that IBIS is is something they’re working on for future models in an interview with Amateur Photographer at CP+ 2019.

They’ve also reaffirmed Canon’s decision to not kill off the EOS M mirrorless system or mount. The M mount will be for lightweight APS-C cameras and lenses, while the RF will be for their full frame mirrorless system.

It looks like Canon may be hoping to succeed where Nikon failed with its short-lived KeyMission series of cameras. The folks at Cinema5D spotted a rather interesting looking camera on the Canon stand at CP+ 2019 this year, and so they had a quick chat with them about it. It looks like Canon may be planning to tackle the action camera market.

The video above is in Japanese, although it comes with English subtitles. So make sure to turn those on if you’re having a little trouble following the conversation.

Nikon’s 58mm f/0.95 looks more like an appendage-waving proof of concept than a lens they expect people to use

There hasn’t been all that much information released on the Nikon Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens. We know that it’s 58mm, that it’s f/0.95 and manual focus, and we believe that it’s going to cost approximately $6,000. The lens is expected to be released at some point this year, but beyond that, there’s not really much to go on.

But Nikon had one on display att CP+ 2019, and Matt Granger got the chance to have a bit of a play with one. In this video, he lets us know his thoughts, and I have to say, for a lens that’s so expensive, it seems fairly useless. Created simply as a proof of concept more than a lens they actually expect people to buy in order to flex their muscles for the competition.

Although Newsshooter might’ve been the first to see Nikon’s Eye AF in action at this year’s CP+ 2019, DPReview actually took along a Sony A7RIII with them to see how well Nikon’s new Eye AF, coming in a firmware update for the Nikon Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras, really compares side-by-side. At least under the environmental conditions set by Nikon on their stand.

When this camera was first teased last October, my mind was stuck somewhere between “wtf?” and “this is so crazy, it just might work!”. They made the camera sort-off official a few days later by releasing some early specs, which just made me even more confused at this odd combination of tech. Since then, it’s all been a little quiet on the Yongnuo front.

But now, the folks at Cinema5D had the chance to chat with Yongnuo about the new camera during CP+ 2019 and hold one in their hands. It confirms a lot of the specs and answers some questions that had thus far remained unanswered.

Previously announced at Photokina 2018, the upcoming Full Frame Foveon L-Mount camera from Sigma has been delayed until 2020, according to reports coming out of CP+ 2019. Twitter user nuko009 has posted images from a presentation given by Sigma CEO, Kazuto Yamaki explaining that the camera’s development has been delayed.

Although he did also announce that it will have a 60.9-megapixel Foveon sensor. Sort of. Foveon sensors don’t tend to calculate megapixels in the same way as traditional Bayer sensors. And it’s actually a 20.3×3-megapixel sensor.
