New Canon SX740 HS point & shoot offers 4K video and 40x optical zoom

Well, we knew it wouldn’t be long before 4K started to trickle down to lower end cameras. It’s been around in phones for years already. And even though plenty of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras still only shoot 1080p, point & shoots need to play catch up to compete.

And here comes Canon with the SX740 HS. It features a 40x f/3.3-6.9 optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-960mm field of view on a full frame sensor. It’s also capable of shooting 4K UHD video, 20.3MP stills with a 10fps manual focus burst mode (7.4fps servo AF), and it only costs $399.

The Fujifilm XF10 is an ultra small compact with an APS-C sensor

Fujifilm’s new compact camera, the Fujifilm XF10, is a tiny little camera with a great big sensor. The ultralight compact boasts a relatively massive APS-C sized CMOS sensor. That sensor shoots a respectable 24.2MP resolution stills, and mostly useless 4K video for up to 30 minutes along with 1080p at up to 60fps.[Read More…]

Nikon has recently announced Coolpix P1000, a compact camera with insane 125x optical zoom. In case you were wondering what it looks like to zoom in that far on a compact camera, Mr Jayanta has filmed a couple of videos that demonstrate it. You’ll be able to check out the stability and autofocus of the camera as it zooms all the way to 3000mm equivalent.

Nikon’s new Coolpix P1000 features insane 125x optical zoom

Nikon has just announced Coolpix P1000:  a compact camera that boasts the world’s highest optical zoom ration of 125x. The lens covers a range of focal lengths between 24mm and 3000mm (35mm equivalent). And if that’s not enough, there’s also 250x digital zoom, which will give you an equivalent focal length of 6000mm.

Leica launches new C-Lux 20.1MP 15x optical zoom 4K compact camera

Leica has announced a new point & shoot; The Leica C-Lux. It contains a 20.1MP 1″ MOS sensor, shoots 4K 30fps video, features 5-way optical image stabilisation, and its 8.8-132mm lens offers the equivalent field of view to 24-360mm on a full frame body. Surprisingly, it’s not the most expensive point & shoot out there, coming in at slightly less than the newly announced Sony RX100 VI. Although it’s more than it should be, thanks to the Leica name.

Panasonic launches LUMIX TZ200: 15x optical zoom and 4K in a compact body

Along with the LUMIX GX9, Panasonic has announced another camera today. It’s a compact Panasonic LUMIX ZS200 (or TZ200 outside the U.S.). Its compact 4.4″ wide body holds a 1” 20.1 MP sensor. It features a Leica lens with 15x optical zoom, covering a 24-360mm equivalent focal length range. With its portability and versatile zoom, Panasonic promotes this camera as the ideal travel companion.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is a baby EOS M5

Canon has introduced PowerShot G1 X Mark III, the latest addition to their premium G-series of compact cameras. For the first time, Canon’s compact camera features a 24.3 MP APS-C CMOS sensor. Another novelty is the Dual Pixel auto-focus technology, which was also never featured in a compact Canon camera before.

PowerShot G1 X Mark III has a 24-72mm equivalent lens with optical image stabilization and f/2.8-5.6 aperture. Judging from the specs, this is basically a “baby M5,” only with a fixed lens.

Ricoh introduces WG-50, a $280 rugged compact camera with 5x zoom

Ricoh has introduced WG-50, their new rugged compact camera. It’s a durable little point-and-shoot: it’s freeze-, crush-, water-, dust- and shockproof. It features a 5x optical zoom lens (35 mm equivalent 28-140mm), and it’s equipped with six LED lights around it. Alex Baker is a portrait and lifestyle driven photographer based in Valencia, Spain. She works on a range of projects from commercial to fine art and has had work featured in publications such as The Daily Mail, Conde Nast Traveller and El Mundo, and has exhibited work across Europe

Dave Williams is an accomplished travel photographer, writer, and best-selling author from the UK. He is also a photography educator and published Aurora expert. Dave has traveled extensively in recent years, capturing stunning images from around the world in a modified van. His work has been featured in various publications and he has worked with notable brands such as Skoda, EE, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, BMW, Conde Nast, Electronic Arts, Discovery, BBC, The Guardian, ESPN, NBC, and many others.

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. He is based in Scotland and has been an early adopter - and occasional beta tester - of almost every digital imaging technology in that time. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
