Canon teases product announcement for February 8th – EOS R8 and EOS R50 imminent?

Canon China has posted a teaser to the Chinese social media website Weibo for a product announcement event on February 8th. The event is set to start at 11:50am China time on February 8th, which means 3:50am for the UK and 10:50pm Easter and 7:50pm Pacific on the February 7th. Time Zones are a pain. Anyway, Canon seems set to make a big announcement within the next couple of days.

There are no hints as to what the product might be, but with rumours of EOS R8 and EOS R50 cameras being announced soon, it’s logical to assume that’s what we might see being announced. The EOS R8 looks like it’ll replace Canon’s original EOS R camera (and perhaps the EOS RP), while the EOS R50 finally appears to be a true EOS M system replacement and a direct replacement for the EOS M50 II.

Canon EOS R8 will not have IBIS says specs leaked ahead of next week’s announcement

Well, yesterday’s rumours of an upcoming Canon EOS R8 and EOS R50 announcement seem a little more real today. And there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that Asobinet is reporting a leaked spec sheet for the Canon EOS R8, telling us pretty much all of the main vital information on the camera. The bad news, though, is that it appears the Canon EOS R8 will not contain an in-body image stabilisation system.

It is, however, expected to contain a 24-megapixel sensor with 4K resolution footage at up 60 fps with 6K oversampling. It’ll shoot HD at up to 180ps and you’ll be able to shoot (presumably raw) stills at up to 40 frames per second. One has to assume that 40fps stills are with the electronic shutter, but still, it’s pretty impressive.

Canon reported to announce EOS R8, EOS R50 bodies and two new lenses in the next week

It looks like Canon’s getting ready to expand their EOS R camera collection. And they’re not just refreshing old models but introducing two new product lines. According to a post on Asobinet, Canon is set to announce two new cameras on February 8th. The first is the (full -frame?) Canon EOS R8 and the APS-C Canon EOS R50 (possibly the first true successor model to the EOS M system).

As well as two new cameras, we’re also expected to see two new lenses coming, the full-frame RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and an APS-C lens, the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. There aren’t any specs on the new lenses yet, but there are prices for one of them, along with the two cameras.

Canon’s new HDR sensor shoots multiple images simultaneously for over 24 stops of dynamic range

Canon has developed a new 12.6-megapixel CMOS sensor designed primarily for monitoring and industrial applications. What’s special about this sensor is that it shoots multiple exposures simultaneously each time it takes a photo to maximise dynamic range. It’s a 1-inch backside-illuminated sensor, that overcomes the limitations of existing sensor technology by splitting the image up into 736 areas.

Each of these different areas automatically determines the best exposure range for that part of the image, allowing it to shoot high and low-exposure shots simultaneously. These are then brought together in the final result, allowing it to have a massive dynamic range of 148 decibels. With one stop of light equating to 6.02dB, this means an overall dynamic range of around 24.6 stops.

Canon patents haptic shutter button that vibrates when you lock focus

I’m quite surprised that it’s taken this long for something like this to appear. Even just in patent form, it’s taken quite a while. To have not seen it in an interchangeable lens camera yet has always struck me as a little odd given the prevalence of this feature in smartphones and countless other devices – especially given the need for silent shooting in many genres, like weddings and events.

Still, Canon has patented (Japanese Patent #2023009356) a vibrating shutter button. It provides haptic feedback, vibrating to let you know when you’ve locked focus on a subject. In all other respects, it’s a perfectly normal shutter. When you half-press it, though, and it nails focus, you get physical feedback, letting you disable your audible confirmation and still be sure your subject’s in focus.

Canon adds focus breathing correction support to several popular f/2.8 and f/4 RF zoom lenses

Canon has released a number of new firmware updates for its f/2.8 and f/4 RF mount zoom lenses. The only update seems to be to add the focus breathing correction feature. This is a new feature in the recently announced Canon EOS R6 Mark II mirrorless camera. The feature is an electronic focus breathing compensation when recording videos. It essentially scales the frame to ensure that you get the same composition throughout the focus range.

Initially, only two lenses supported the Focus Breathing Correction feature of the EOS R6 Mark II, the RF 24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM and the RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Now, it’s been expanded to add five more zoom lenses to the mix, including Canon’s most popular f/2.8 and f/4 RF mount zoom lenses. What lenses compatibility will be added to in the future or which bodies might also see focus breathing compensation still remains to be seen.

Canon has a new 19-megapixel global shutter full-frame CMOS sensor to be released in 2023

Canon has announced that they’ve developed a 19-megapixel global shutter full-frame CMOS sensor. There are four different models of the same LI5030S sensor in colour, black and white, colour/near-infrared and full spectrum, all capable of shooting full resolution at up to 58 frames per second. Canon says that the new sensor will be ready to go on sale in January 2023.

But don’t get too getting too excited just yet. It looks like we probably won’t be seeing this come in an EOS R mirrorless camera. At least, not anytime soon. At the moment, it appears that this sensor is targeted more towards scientific and industrial use, rather than photographic. Use cases where being able to see full unwarped and undistorted images shot in rapid succession is often mission-critical.

Canon has killed off its legendary MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro lens

This is a day that many will mourn. While the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro is by far the more popular lens, the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro is certainly the more unique and more revered amongst many macro photographers. Offering up to 5x magnification, it certainly stood out amongst the others on the market – for any camera system. Well now, it appears that Canon has finally discontinued it, accordin to the Canon Japan website.

Unlike the 100mm f/2.8 macro, though, it looks like there may not be an RF Mount replacement for this one. There have been no announcements or hints from Canon, nor even any rumours. It was added to the Canon EF lens lineup in 1999 and I’ve had a play with one myself over the years. Even today, there is nothing else out there that really replaces it, with most “extreme” macro lenses topping out at 2x.
