Sony has released essential firmware updates for two of their top cameras, bringing helpful improvements. The a1II mirrorless camera now has firmware 3.00, which includes display layouts that change based on how you hold the camera, better file management for its dual card slots, and support for new professional applications. On the other hand, those using the VENICE 2 cinema camera can now download firmware 4.0, which adds the EL Zone exposure system and allows users to see multiple frame lines in different colors simultaneously. Sony VENICE 2 EL Zone Exposure System tackles real issues that photographers and filmmakers have asked to fix.
a1II Gets Smarter Display and File Management
The a1II’s firmware 3.00 changes the way you use your camera. Now, when you switch between holding the camera sideways or upright, the shooting information adjusts independently, so you won’t have to strain your neck to see the settings. Plus, file management is improved significantly. You can now delete and rate pictures simultaneously for both memory card slots, which will help you save time when sorting through your photos.
Do you want to view real folder and file names instead of just random numbers while playing back your videos? This update also lets you label video clips as OK, NG, or KEEP while recording or later, so you can easily mark the ones you want to keep.
New Professional Apps Expand Capabilities
Sony is enhancing the a1II for specific professional tasks with this update. The Monitor & Control app now features a focus map display and an IRIS operation bar, allowing for better control of your shots (make sure you have version 2.3.0 or later). For those who shoot a lot, the update includes options for Scan and Tag Photo Cropping and Volume Photography Commands, but you’ll have to wait until after August 2025 for the paid license.
Additionally, the Camera Authenticity Solution has improved by changing from server timestamps to using your camera’s internal clock for dating images. One thing to note is that WPA and WEP Wi-Fi security options are no longer available. You’ll need to switch to WPA2 or WPA3 from now on, which is something that should have been done a long time ago.
VENICE 2 Adds EL Zone and Multi-Color Frame Lines
Filmmakers using the VENICE 2 will benefit from some new updates in firmware 4.0. The main highlight is the addition of Sony’s EL Zone exposure system, which helps directors of photography achieve better exposure in tricky lighting situations.
Another great time-saver on set is the ability to show up to three frame lines simultaneously, each in a different color. This means you won’t have to guess which line is for which aspect ratio or delivery format. The update also supports the CBK-3621XS Camera Extension System and some general improvements in usability and operability that Sony often mentions without going into detail.

Final Thoughts
Both updates focus on common daily issues that photographers and filmmakers deal with. The a1II has made improvements that make everything easier, from handling files to managing complex FTP tasks, while the VENICE 2 introduces features that improve efficiency on set. Whether you’re a wedding photographer managing thousands of images on two cards or a director of photography working on multiple projects at once, these updates truly help improve your workflow.
You can now download the a1II’s firmware version 3.00 from Sony’s support site. If you use the VENICE 2, check with your rental company or production facility for instructions on installing the 4.0 update.
