The Sony BURANO 8K E-mount camera (also known as the MPC-2610), just got an important update—Firmware Version 2.0. This update brings a lot of new features. These include new recording formats, improved stabilization, additional metadata, and various adjustments. Additionally, this fantastic camera gives you even more control over the stunning footage you can capture.
New Recording Modes for BURANO 8K
This update brings three amazing new recording formats that are worth checking out:
- FFcrop 3.8K 16:9 at up to 120fps – Perfect for capturing slow motion without using the full sensor.
- S35 4.3K 4:3 scan for anamorphic shooting, up to 60fps – Gives those classic movie vibes.
- S35 1.9K 16:9 at up to 240fps — This is the way for smooth action shots. Just a note: you won’t be able to use SDI and HDMI outputs with this setting.
If you like anamorphic shooting, Sony has also included a 1.8x desqueeze option, which should help make monitoring easier.
Monitoring, Metadata & Display Goodies
This update introduces VF Gamma Display Assist for users of S-Log3. This allows you to see a clearer preview of your final image while monitoring, eliminating the guesswork. There’s also a new “Monitor FHD” option for SDI output. Plus, it keeps your on-screen information neatly outside the frame, which is great for those who prefer a clean display.
You’ll also have access to Time Code and Clip Name metadata overlays, breathing compensation metadata, and image stabilization data included in your X-OCN files. This is helpful if you’re editing later or working with visual effects.
Expanded Frame Rate Options
Extra flexibility comes here. Sony has added some unique and valuable S&Q frame rate options, including 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110fps. This gives you better control over how motion feels. It is excellent if you’re trying to achieve a specific style.
White Balance, LUTs, and Focus Improvements
The number of white balance memory slots has increased from 3 to 8, which is a significant improvement for quick shooting. Sony says the image quality has improved as well if you use your own 3D LUTs. This could mean less time adjusting settings and more time shooting.
In terms of autofocus, Sony claims it now works more smoothly at popular cinematic frame rates like 24P, 25P, and 29.97P. It’s one of those upgrades you’ll appreciate once you use it.
Remote Control & System Tweaks
Great news for those who work remotely! You can now adjust the focus and zoom from the camera, Sony’s M&C app, and other external devices. The iris can currently only be controlled with a remote panel. Additionally, you can now manage variable ND and tally settings remotely.
They’ve also introduced some handy features on the status screen, such as camera ID, Reel #, and media formatting options. While these may seem minor, they help make production processes run more smoothly.
Final Thoughts
I think Sony BURANO 8K Firmware Update 2.0 makes BURANO feel more like a professional cinema camera than ever before. These changes are not just simple fixes or extra features. They are valuable tools for those using this camera on film sets. That S35 1.9K 240fps mode is fantastic for action scenes, music videos, or even creative documentary work.
It seems like Sony is paying attention and including what filmmakers really want.
